(Which is not to forget that my father's white privilege was to serve as a combat medic in the Korean War and to spend much his life dealing with the aftermath of that service. Collective actions are essential to progress. But we are all also individuals.)
At the same time, we see that the first majority-minority school board ever in Houston has elected as President of the Houston Independent School Board a man who engaged in anti-gay smears in one of his election campaigns.
In the end we have to stay our own course in life. We often won't find automatic or easy agreement even with people or circumstances that at a first look seem amenable to our overall outlook on politics and society.
The best government and the best leadership will come from empathy and sound public policy rather than simply being a result of electing people who resemble us in some superficial manner.
Our best service to ourselves will come from charting our own moral course.
