I keep coming back though to all the times that some white working class folks were asked to share the prosperity with people superficially different from themselves when land was plentiful or when unions were stronger, and how so often the answer was Jim Crow or the Solid South or Ronald Reagan.
And then again, the view that we've been sold out by elites of both parties is also true.
We've got to keep pressing ahead to the most inclusive and hopeful understanding of our nation that we can achieve so we can have a future where everybody has a fair chance.
We've got to try for as much empathy as we can muster even in the likely very angry campaign year ahead.
