My relevant options are protest politics, everyday kindness that can be hopeful to others & occasional apathy for sanity.
I vote from habit and a Hail Mary hope that it will matter. I'm not pessimistic. I've not given up. I went to the Michael Brown march in Houston last week. I'm often optimistic.
The majority of elected officials in Texas and Washington actively want to harm people who share my values and want to harm the most vulnerable in our society.
I hope this will change in my lifetime, but if this is the future then we'll stay our course. We can't give up.
Yet neither do we have to pretend that our current politics are anything other than money-owned and cruel.
I don't look to this system to reform itself. The work of freedom is up to each of us.
