![]() I took part yesterday in the now-weekly protest at the Social Security office located 13302 Westheimer. It's every Friday from noon to one at the intersection of Westheimer & Eldridge. It's a well-trafficked intersection with many motorists glad to see people standing for democracy. Above you see a picture from the protest. There 27 folks there despite a forecast all week of rain for Friday. The protest is organized by a rank & file citizen of Harris County. Someone just like you. The next protest will be when you organize it. There are many young Black and brown young men and women who greet the mainly older white crowd with enthusiasm. We need to be everywhere in the county looking for support. This is a location a few miles outside the loop. I keep stressing the value of protest because it is clear that the main opposition to Trump/Musk will have to come from each of us. The big law firms and elite colleges are caving & many elected Democrats are not pushing back. Below you see a picture and headline from The Economist magazine about events in Turkey. From The Economist: The president had a great conversation with Erdogan a couple of days ago,” Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, told an interviewer on March 21st. “There’s just a lot of good, positive news coming out of Turkey.” As he spoke, the biggest protests in over a decade were spreading across the country. Perhaps Mr Witkoff was referring to America’s prospective sale of f-35 jets to Turkey, or to the country’s offer to mediate in Ukraine. But that he said nothing about the arrest on March 19th of Turkey’s top opposition politician, Ekrem Imamoglu, or the ensuing demonstrations,...On Istanbul’s streets there is a sense that the genie is out of the bottle. “The more we keep quiet, the more they attack us. Enough is enough,” says Silan, a young woman wearing a surgical mask to protect herself from tear gas and cctv cameras. Meral, a housewife, joined the protests with her daughter, a university student. “This is not about Imamoglu or the chp,” she says. “This is because our right to vote and to be elected is being taken away.” Here is an overview of the situation in Turkey from the BBC. I try to keep it local. But the bravery of the protesters in Turkey merits mention & you can never make the point enough that it can happen here. There will be a big protest in Houston at City Hall on Saturday, April 5th at noon. There will be one the same day in Conroe. These protests will be across the country. Find one near you and show up. It is up to each of us. Here is the Houston Democracy Project list of things each of us can do to fight Trump/Musk. Here is a fundraising pitch for the Houston Democracy Project. I'm doing the work and showing up in many different ways. Please help the effort. I'm on the Egberto Willies Politics Done Right Show every Thursday from 6 AM to 7 AM for the Houston Democracy Project segment. You can hear the show on the radio, stream it on KPFT or watch later Egberto's YouTube channel.
