![]() What a day to be friendly, appreciate things around us & sharply oppose the evil we are seeing from our officials. I drove this morning to the McDonald’s at Main & Houston to get a cup of coffee. On the way, I saw this construction vehicle you see above with a person driving it & then in the McDonald's parking lot a colorful tree that made shadows. The tree is below. In the car I listened to a CD of a live New Order concert. The appreciation of the value of everyday life is much better than the denial of the humanity of much of the population that is guiding our nation today. We are getting set for a journey. We can't lose ourselves or stop enjoying life. Everyday life is fun and interesting. The Musk/Trump people are evil and we have a fight ahead. Get yourself as okay as you can in whatever way works for you. You are needed. You're needed in whatever way you feel able to help. I'm on the Egberto Willies Politics Done Right Show every Thursday from 6 AM to 7 AM for the Houston Democracy Project segment. ![]() The Houston Democracy Project tries to keep it local. But we can't fully join the fight for freedom at home, until we are clear on what is going on with Trump, Musk and the whole crew. They are evil. They want to take us back to a pre-Civil War America. They are slavery/Indian removal-level evil. We must oppose them all the time. Trump is a eugenicist. So is Musk. They want to destroy government. And democracy as well. Trump pardoned his January 6th militia-in-waiting. JD Vance recently spoke well of Robert E. Lee. Vance is evil. Working to undo all progress from Appomattox to the New Deal to the Civil Rights Movement to present day accomplishments like gay marriage is evil. This evil will require a local infrastructure. Project 2025 won't implement itself. Local officials will be needed to support, enact and execute the Trump/Musk agenda. I know we are often a policy and process driven crew on our side. But evil is a fact of life alongside policy and process. These people are evil. We must call it for what it is and fight back all the time. Will Republican Councilmember Davis Back Up Words About ICE Raids With Appeal To Dan Patrick?1/29/2025 ![]() Yesterday at Public Comment Session of Houston City Council, Houstonian Tammy Rodriguez asked Mayor Whitmire and Council if the Houston Police Department is helping with all the immigration raids taking place. The discussion begins at the hour & two minute mark of the Houston TV feed of the meeting and lasts for about 12 minutes. Mayor Whitmire said HPD is not assisting in the raids. I believe him. Lt. Governor Dan Patrick today listed his top priorities for the current legislative session. Here is #8: Senate Bill 8 – Requiring Local Law Enforcement to Assist the Federal Government’s Deportation Efforts Mayor Whitmire is always talking up his relationship with Dan Patrick. Will he lobby the Lt. Governor on this bill? At the hour and 12 minute point of the Council meeting yesterday, Republican At-Large Councilmember Rev. Willie Davis talked about how he is working with fellow pastors to alleviate people 's concerns about the raids & how HPD is just on normal operations. Above you see Rev. Davis talking yesterday about how HPD is going about its normal concerns. Will Republican Davis back up his words with efforts to convince his fellow Republicans in Austin that Lt. Governor Patrick is on the wrong track? Sitting next to Councilmemeber Davis above is fellow Republican Councilmember Fred Flickinger. There are six Republicans on Houston City Council. They are Davis, Flickinger, Twila Carter, Amy Peck, Mary Nan Huffman and Julian Ramirez. Where do they stand on ICE actions in Houston & on Trump defying the courts to block essential federal dollars for Houston? Councilmember Carter attended a Mattress Mack-sponsored get out the vote rally this past October. That might be a clue into her mindset. The six Houston Council Republicans must be held accountable for Republican attacks on our city. Contact them and demand they serve the City of Houston and not the far right Republican Party. Public comment time at Houston City Council is each Tuesday at 2 PM. You can speak at Council and you should call and e-mail your councilmembers. The earlier before the session you sign up, the higher up on the speaker's list you'll be. The agenda session to conduct Council business is each Wednesday at 9 AM. The agenda is posted in advance. Council can be watched on HTV Houston Television and is simulcast on the HTV feed on Facebook. Authoritarianism will require a local infrastructure. Local officials will be needed to support and implement the Trump/Musk agenda. We must keep a sharp eye on the people right here at home. It's been a good two days for our ability to protect ourselves and make progress even in these times. Yesterday, the Harris County District Attorney's office dropped charges against citizen-hero Sarah Terrell who was arrested at an HISD unelected Board of Managers meeting for telling the truth. From the Houston Chronicle: "Charges were dropped against a Houston ISD community activist who was dragged out of her chair and arrested after repeatedly shouting at a Jan. 23 Board of Managers meeting, the Harris County District Attorney's Office confirmed Tuesday...Sarah Terrell was charged with trespassing after repeatedly shouting before board members planned to vote on a motion to sell district properties. The charges were accepted by the district attorney's office at the time and were dismissed after a two-hour pretrial diversion program, a spokesperson said Tuesday." The Houston Democracy Project made three blog posts here and posted on social media for people to e-mail the DA's office calling for the charges to be dropped. My understanding is that the DA's office got a good number of e-mails & that they made a difference. The days and months ahead may bring many conflicts between pro-democracy patriots and people who work to take democracy away. We must press our elected officials at every turn to be the side of democracy. If we don't stand up for Sarah, who will stand up for us when we take needed action to protect freedom for ourselves, our families and our communities? Elected officials must know we will have the back of everyday citizens like Sarah who act bravely on behalf of all of us. We showed up for Sarah just as she did for us. Today was another great day in Houston. The John Cornyn Houston Protest marked 8 years on Houston streets with a strong outing. You see the team above. We get good reactions every week--But today was very strong. People are encouraged when they see others standing strong. In addition to voting, we must be willing to be present physically. We saw this recently in South Korea where the people successfully rose up against martial law. There is every reason to believe that when Trump refuses to obey court orders or strips our rights by decree, a good portion of our politics will move to the streets or other non-conventional forms of political expression and action. The John Cornyn Houston Office Protest team sets the exempt of showing up & is ready for the fights ahead. We have a social media following and are well-known for standing every week for 8 years at the very busy intersection of Memorial & Detering. Please share word of the Cornyn Protest & please join us for friends/foes/passers-by/police to see. We are a friendly team with extra signs for all. Whatever amount of time you can spend with us is the right amount of time. Any day you join us is the right day. She was asked to be quiet by the unelected Board of Managers. But she kept talking and telling the truth. Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare must drop charges against Ms. Terrell. Here is the e-mail to share this view with the DA: [email protected] Sarah will be in court tomorrow, Monday, 1/27. Here is an e-mail sent to DA Teare's office on this subject by everyday Houstonian Ira Dember: Please drop all charges against Sarah Terrell. Yes, she momentarily disrupted a public meeting. However, she was courageously speaking up and standing up on behalf of thousands of ordinary folks concerned about a de facto major crime — blatant HISD corruption — and perhaps someday de jure. Sarah is a hero. I urge you to use the full discretion of your office to treat her as one. Thank you. This is a fine letter. How can Sarah face punishment while the January 6th traitors who attacked cops and tried to overturn an election go free? How can Sarah be put in this position by an unelected Board? The days and months ahead may bring many conflicts between pro-democracy patriots and people who work to take democracy away. We must press our elected officials at every turn to be the side of democracy. If we don't stand up for Sarah, who will stand up for us when we take needed action to protect freedom for ourselves, our families and our communities? Elected officials must know we will have the back of everyday citizens like Sarah who act bravely on behalf of all of us. Citizen-activism played a big part in DA Teare's election. The censure of former DA Kim Ogg by Harris County Democratic Party Precinct Chairs was an important milestone in Mr. Teare's primary win over former DA Ogg. That effort was fully volunteer-activist led. DA Teare knows the value of community leadership. From the Houston Chronicle about Sarah's arrest: Nearly five-and-a-half hours into the board's regular January meeting, HISD board member Janette Garza Lindner proposed a motion for the appointed board to authorize the sale of 17 district properties deemed surplus.....“Why don’t you sell Hattie Mae while you’re at it?” said Sarah Terrell, before the board voted on the measure. “You are the most disappointing people.”...The Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center is HISD’s headquarters.... After Terrell spoke, HISD board President Audrey Momanaee verbally gave Terrell her first warning, and Terrell immediately responded with “You are so disappointing.” . And it went from there until Sarah was dragged out in handcuffs as you see in the picture above. It has recently been reported that Superintendent Mike Miles authorized $870 million is HISD purchases without proper board approval. From the Houston Landing: "Houston ISD Superintendent Mike Miles’ administration greenlit about $870 million in spending over the past 16 months without receiving required school board approval, breaking district policy.." Also from The Houston Chronicle: "Alex Elizondo, HISD's chief of public affairs and communications, said Friday that the Harris County District Attorney's Office had accepted charges filed against Terrell for trespassing. ....." Imagine a decent citizen of the community being charged with trespassing in a public building by this usurper board. Spending $870 million without proper oversight is fine--But Ms. Terrell merits arrest and charges. Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare must drop charges against Ms. Terrell. Here is the e-mail to share this view with the DA: [email protected] Sarah is a great Houstonian with a history of advocacy and care for our schools far more extensive than any of the so-called Board of Managers. As Mr. Dember says above, she should be honored rather than arrested. We must understand the stakes involved in these fights. We must understand that each of us has the power to act and make a difference. We must look out and care for one another in these very dark times. Power must see that we are willing to fight. The photo above is our year 7 protest last January. The Cornyn Protest Team shows up confidently for democracy in a highly visible place. We won't be pushed off the street by the aggression of the right. With Trump's release of the cop-attacking January 6th traitors, it's been made clear that political violence by the right may well go unpunished. This attempt to cause fear among democracy-loving Americans cannot be rewarded. This past April, the Cornyn Protest Team successfully obtained a misdemeanor conviction in Houston Municipal Court against a man who threw eggs at us from his car. In addition to voting, we must be willing to be present physically. There is every reason to believe that when Trump refuses to obey court orders or strips our rights by decree, a good portion of our politics will move to the streets or other non-conventional forms of political expression and action. Imagine a decent citizen of the community being charged with trespassing in a public building by this usurper board. Spending $870 million without proper oversight is fine--But Ms. Terrell merits arrest and charges. Here is what Community Voices for Public Education said about the arrest in an e-mail to supporters: "We urge the Board to prioritize de-escalation strategies and avoid arresting individuals in non-violent situations. Sarah received a first warning, followed by a second warning just three seconds later, and was then ordered to leave the board room moments later before being arrested—this chaotic escalation makes no sense as a policy for constituents. Despite Sarah offering to sit down, she was handcuffed and charged, even though there was no threat to anyone’s safety to justify such an escalation. This disproportionate response sends a harmful message to students about conflict resolution and silences those who wish to voice their concerns. HISD should have allowed her the opportunity to leave voluntarily, rather than resorting to arrest." Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare should drop charges against Ms. Terrell. That's a source of hope. The Houston Democracy Project will keep at it no matter what. Your contribution will help me continue the effort. (Above is a picture of Houston I took. There is a photography section in the Houston Democracy Project.) Authoritarianism will require a local infrastructure. Local officials will be fully involved with supporting and implementing Musk/Trump's far-right plans. They should be held accountable. We must also ask more of Democratic Party elected officials. Consistent low turnout in Democratic districts and failure to acknowledge the seriousness of what is going on is no path forward. Here is some of what the Houston Democracy Project involves: *The Houston Democracy Project Blog you are reading right now. * The Houston Democracy Project Hour on the Egberto Willies' Politics Done Right Show every Thursday on KPFT-FM at 6 AM. You can watch it on Egberto's YouTube page at any time. * Co-Organizer of the John Cornyn Houston Office Protest, which is approaching its 8th year on Houston streets. It's essential people see others like themselves willing to stand confidently for democracy no matter the aggression of the right. We set the example. * A number of appearances as the featured speaker at local Democratic Party club meetings. My next speaking engagement is set for the Oak Forest Democrats meeting on March 3rd. * A consistent and active social media presence with a wide audience. Find me on Bluesky, where I have nearly 7000 followers so far @neilaquino.bsky.social * Active participation in the Texas Grassroots Alliance, which works to support autonomous Texas grassroots organizers. I recently took part in panel discussions about the future of Texas progressive activism at the TGA Progressive Summit in Fort Worth. * I'm the 2024 Barbara Cigainero Volunteer of the Year award winner for the Houston LGBTQ+ Political Caucus. * A special focus on Houston City Council and democracy issues. I sometimes speak at Council. I often post here about Council and Mayor Whitmire. I've closely followed and made an impact on Council's discussion of issues such as the right to protest on sidewalks & Houston's Sidewalk Ordinance. How we use public space is an essential aspect of democracy. I'm a resource for information about Houston City Council in general. Please e-mail me at [email protected] with any questions about what is going on at Council. I'll do my best to answer or work to find an answer. * Numerous, ongoing one-on-one conversations with rank and file democracy advocates and with candidates/elected officials about support and protection of our freedom. * I was chosen by a television news program in Estonia as a Texas activist to talk to, for a show about Election '24 broadcast across the three Baltic nations. * Always showing up for others & not yielding an inch to the right. I'm also willing to challenge elected officials. I'm fully autonomous with no entangling connection to any interest group or politician. I was quoted in the Houston Chronicle online edition about protests at City Hall this past Saturday. I made three important points: 1. It is up to us. Nobody is coming to save us. 2. We have to find our way to one another despite our differences. 3. The 1st Amendment is your permit to protest. From the Chronicle: "57-year-old Neil Aquino, who has been part of a group that has protested outside of Senator John Cornyn’s office in Houston every Tuesday afternoon for the last eight years. Aquino said he came Saturday mainly to oppose Trump’s inauguration, but welcomed the manifold crowd of feminists, Democrats, Brown Berets, Democratic Socialists and more. 'It’s important for people to see people like themselves stand up for democracy about any topic,” Aquino said. “The first amendment is your permit.' " Our freedom is up to us. Please contribute as I work for all of us. Thank you. ![]() Houston activist Sarah Terrell was arrested at the HISD Board meeting this past Thursday evening. And it went from there until Sarah was dragged out in handcuffs as you see above. I got tossed out of the last HISD meeting I attended. The Board President told me I was too loud and I told her she was not elected and not to talk to me. We went around a couple of times and she threw me out. Just like with Sarah. I didn't go there looking for trouble. The unelected board that sits there in place of the elected board is difficult to look at. The thought of being a good citizen who cares about Houston and about democracy & then of being spoken to by that unelected board is unpleasant. It's been a long time since I got thrown out of any place. The HISD Board of Managers and Superintendent Mike Miles are really hard to take. That this is so is reflected in the rare and solid ballot box defeat of the HISD Bond this past November. In the last few days, it has been reported that Superintendent Miles authorized $870 million is HISD purchases without proper board approval. From the Houston Landing: "Houston ISD Superintendent Mike Miles’ administration greenlit about $870 million in spending over the past 16 months without receiving required school board approval, breaking district policy....HISD administrators did not bring about 130 purchase agreements — all made through a process that allows HISD to skip soliciting bids from vendors — to the district’s state-appointed board for monthly approval, bypassing a step designed to provide oversight and transparency...The total potential value of the purchase agreements amounted to about $55 million per month during the 16-month period, nearly double the monthly average of $30 million approved during the two years before that span, a Houston Landing analysis shows." Also from The Houston Chronicle: "Alex Elizondo, HISD's chief of public affairs and communications, said Friday that the Harris County District Attorney's Office had accepted charges filed against Terrell for trespassing. ....." (And also as renters.) Above you see notice of the event. It was also posted in Spanish. It has been difficult to get local elected Democrats to even acknowledge the imminent prospect of mass deportations. As part of my work with the Houston Democracy Project, I spoke at Council in October about the deportations. I've also posted here about how Texas Senate District 15, my senate district, is 42% Latino and 9% Asian. Senator Molly Cook should take an active role in telling people in SD 15 what is on the way. Mr. Martinez posted some pictures of the event. There were many topics addressed beyond immigration and renters rights. I hope it was a constructive time. Councilmember Sallie Alcorn also attended as did a member of Republican Councilmember Twila Carter's staff. Councilmember Carter attended a Mattress Mack-sponsored get out the vote rally. So I'd not trust anybody associated with her about any immigration concerns. Councilmember Martinez was a part of a Zoom town hall in early October calling for a tax hike to replace City of Houston budget funds lost from storm recovery efforts. He was joined in that effort by Councilmembers Alcorn, Letitia Plummer and Mario Castillo. The four councilmembers did not have to do that. They took a political risk to call for a tax increase. (The needed revenue hike got nowhere. A portion of the lost funds was restored by far-right Dan Patrick throwing a bone to his buddy Mayor Whitmire. It wasn't a gift. It was money Houston pays in taxes to the state and that often does not get returned.) There is a lot of trouble ahead. Deportation raids may well break up families and involve deportations of American citizens. Civil rights are at risk. Elected officials are rarely reliable allies. But you never know who will show up with some imagination or even courage. Councilmember Martinez's meeting was a step forward because he acknowledged the issue publicly. Thank you to Councilmember Martinez for that step. Though soon enough a lot more will be needed.
