Rep. Crenshaw Forum-When Rarely Has Other Than Bad Thought, He Does Not Act

I recently listened to/watched a forum where Republican Congressman Dan Crenshaw took some questions in a controlled setting. He's not man enough to face a real town hall. Above you see a picture from the event. Here is the event itself if you want to subject yourself to it. I watched so you did not have to. The event was co-hosted by the Woodlands Area Economic Development Partnership. Here is a map of Crenshaw's district.

Here are some of the lowlights:

* Asked if he would go after municipal governments in the way DOGE is going after the federal government, Crenshaw said a lot of what goes wrong in government is stupidity rather than corruption. He also said though that there are a lot of corrupt officials in Harris County. He did not not say who they are. You know--It's those-type people who live in Harris County.

* Crenshaw said someday there would be another Democratic President. So I guess we can give him the low bar of accepting that fair elections will continue. Maybe he just doesn't hear or see what Trump is doing to purge voters.

* He was very focused on trans issues.  He said he did not want his two young daughters have to compete against boys in sports. What do these people do when their own kids turn out to be trans or gay? They are obsessed with this stuff.

* Crenshaw was asked "Could you lead the way in securing jobs for the fired veterans?” He said in reply--“If you’re doing a job and doing it well, we’ve got to fight for you.” He did not say how are when he'd be fighting for these veterans. He said just firing people won't make government more efficient" and that if mistakes are made he has faith cabinet secretaries will "clean it up." He did not discuss how he'll conduct any oversight of that process.

* There was a question about free school lunches and also a question about funding from a woman who works for the Montgomery County Food Bank. He said all the right things other than what he'd do to maintain funding.

* He said "Nobody is touching your social security" although it was "not working well" for people still some years away from retirement like himself. That is not quite the case. There are fixes he could advocate for if he wanted to show leadership. Crenshaw said he did not think there was a lot of Social Security fraud like Musk is lying about. Egberto Willies at Politics Done Right has a fine report on Crenshaw's discussion of Social Security at this forum.

* Crenshaw is in a feud with Tucker Carlson. I wish they'd go off together and not come back. Crenshaw took a dig at Carlson at the end of forum. Crenshaw last month was caught on a microphone saying he'd like to kill Carlson. A cause of this feud is Carlson's opposition to aid for Ukraine. Crenshaw said Putin was a bad guy. Still though, Crenshaw never stands up to Trump.

Nothing makes Crenshaw do the right thing even if once in a while he has something more than a lousy idea.

* There was no talk of rights being lost or attacks on the courts.

* At the end of the performance, there was a pitch by the host for the Montgomery County Road Bond and how it would be so good for the local economy. Republicans like government when it is for them at home and when it's used to deport innocent people to the torture jail in El Salvador.

It was difficult to have much respect for Rep. Crenshaw from watching him in this meeting. He has a distant notion of what would be right conduct, but no desire or courage to do better.

(The Houston Democracy Project is always on the go. In addition to the report of the session above, here are accounts of recent public forums with Rep. Wesley Hunt, Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector Annette Ramirez,, State Senator Molly Cook, Rep. Al Green, Rep. Lizzie Fletcher and Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee.)

13302 Westheimer Social Security Protest Each Friday-Brave Democracy Fighters In Turkey

I took part yesterday in the now-weekly protest at the Social Security office located 13302 Westheimer. It's every Friday from noon to one at the intersection of Westheimer & Eldridge. It's a well-trafficked intersection with many motorists glad to see people standing for democracy.

Above you see a picture from the protest. There 27 folks there despite a forecast all week of rain for Friday. The protest is organized by a rank & file citizen of Harris County. Someone just like you. The next protest will be when you organize it.

There are many young Black and brown young men and women who greet the mainly older white crowd with enthusiasm. We need to be everywhere in the county looking for support. This is a location a few miles outside the loop.

I keep stressing the value of protest because it is clear that the main opposition to Trump/Musk will have to come from each of us. The big law firms and elite colleges are caving & many elected Democrats are not pushing back.

Below you see a picture and headline from The Economist magazine about events in Turkey.

From The Economist:

The president had a great conversation with Erdogan a couple of days ago,” Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, told an interviewer on March 21st. “There’s just a lot of good, positive news coming out of Turkey.” As he spoke, the biggest protests in over a decade were spreading across the country. Perhaps Mr Witkoff was referring to America’s prospective sale of f-35 jets to Turkey, or to the country’s offer to mediate in Ukraine. But that he said nothing about the arrest on March 19th of Turkey’s top opposition politician, Ekrem Imamoglu, or the ensuing demonstrations,...On Istanbul’s streets there is a sense that the genie is out of the bottle. “The more we keep quiet, the more they attack us. Enough is enough,” says Silan, a young woman wearing a surgical mask to protect herself from tear gas and cctv cameras. Meral, a housewife, joined the protests with her daughter, a university student. “This is not about Imamoglu or the chp,” she says. “This is because our right to vote and to be elected is being taken away.”

Here is an overview of the situation in Turkey from the BBC.

I try to keep it local. But the bravery of the protesters in Turkey merits mention & you can never make the point enough that it can happen here.

There will be a big protest in Houston at City Hall on Saturday, April 5th at noon. There will be one the same day in Conroe. These protests will be across the country. Find one near you and show up. It is up to each of us.

Here is the Houston Democracy Project list of things each of us can do to fight Trump/Musk. Here is a fundraising pitch for the Houston Democracy Project. I'm doing the work and showing up in many different ways.  Please help the effort.

11 HPD Units At Protest Over Bike Lanes-How Will Respond When We Are On Streets For Our Most Basic Rights?

A peaceful protest in Houston this past Tuesday about Mayor Whitmire's anti-bike and pedestrian safety policies, had a large police presence that did not make sense. Especially when we've told over and over that the Houston Police Department lacks resources and has failed to investigate many major crimes.

The protest was staged by BikeHouston.

From The Houston Chronicle.

"Drivers stuck in standstill traffic on Heights Boulevard on Tuesday saw community advocates standing in the now-exposed bike lane, protesting the loss of small protective barriers known as armadillos....As police urged the protesters to stay on the sidewalk, the bicycle advocates held signs, rang cowbells, and cheered as cyclists rode through the unprotected lane, the discolored spots where barriers once stood offering no defense...Around two dozen residents from across the Houston area attended the protest, voicing concerns about cyclist safety..Houston City Council Member Abbie Kamin, whose district includes the Heights, said the Memorial Heights Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone paid $100,000 to install the armadillos in 2022....Kamin said the city should be focusing on its $300 million budget shortfall, flooding infrastructure, water leaks and trash pick up instead of diminishing public safety projects."The mayor's weird and wasteful obsession with ripping up community investments is creating a serious safety risk and costing Houstonians at a time that demands fiscal responsibility," Kamin said."

Here is what BikeHouston said on Twitter, in response to me asking , about HPD at the protest:

"Houston PD showed up with 11 cruisers, and told us to get on the sidewalks or be placed under arrest. There was also a helicopter circling overhead, but not sure it was law enforcement."

Above you see a picture of some of the officers having a conversation and below you see a picture from the Houston Chronicle of what the protest looked like.

I sometimes focus on the policing of protest in Houston because we are headed to major attacks on civil liberties and democracy. With institutions we've been told to trust not able or willing to fight back, it's going to be up to us. And there certainly has been little pushback on attacks on our rights from the ten Houston City Council Democrats who theoretically have some say over the police.

If this is how many police are sent to a modest protest about bike lanes, what will the response be when we are on the streets for our most basic rights?

Below is information on following and interacting with Houston City Council. Contact them and remind them of your right to protest and of their obligation to do all they can to protect our freedom.

Public comment time at Houston City Council is each Tuesday at 2 PM. Here is how you can speak at Council and here is how to contact your councilmember.  The earlier before the session you sign up, the higher up on the speaker's list you'll be. The agenda session to conduct Council business is each Wednesday at 9 AM. The agenda is posted in advance. Council can be watched live on HTV Houston Television and the most recent session available at any time on the HTV feed on Facebook. We Are Fighting For Our Rights Day-By-Day In Hope We Can Get Through This & Be Free

There was a crowd of 64 at Week 424 of the John Cornyn Houston Office Protest yesterday. Above you see a picture of many at the protest on the street. At the bottom of the post is a fine Houstonian who acquired a chicken suit at her own expense to point out that John Cornyn will not hold any town halls.

The John Cornyn Houston Office Protest is each Tuesday, 11:30-1, 5300 Memorial Dr. Bring your sign or there are a number of extra signs.

We're trying to get through this struggle day-to-day without losing so many of our rights that it is all too far gone. There is no magic formula. Just day-to-day showing up & having each other's backs. We're hoping there will be elections free enough in 2026 where something hopeful can happen. Trump's executive order requiring onerous proof of citizenship requirements is a direct attack on our right to vote.

None other than Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer recently said that we are very possibly headed to a nationwide series of street protests.

From Bloomberg News reported in the Spokane Spokesman-Review:

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer predicted Americans will “rise up” if President Donald Trump defies courts that challenge his policies, saying he doesn’t trust Trump’s pledges to abide by judicial rulings..Schumer was responding to a question on NBC’s “Meet the Press” about a previous comment that any such effort by Trump would require “extraordinary action” by Democrats...If “the public is so, so angry and takes action – and certainly we Democrats will – it will trigger a mass movement from one end of the country to the other, something that we haven’t seen in a very long time,” Schumer said.

It's people with some of the least amount of power who are being asked to bear the greatest burdens to defend these failing systems. Just everyday citizens. When "the public is so, so angry and takes action" will our elected officials have our backs? There will be so many police in response to that moment. And quite likely the National Guard and maybe the regular army.

There will be anti-Musk/Trump protests in Houston on April 5th. These protests will be across the nation. Look for protests near you and spread the word. I think this will easily be the biggest day of protests of Musk/Trump's Presidency. I'm seeing word of the April 5th protest being shared from many people.

When you go, keep an eye on how HPD or your local police handles the protests. We'll be marching for our most basic rights. Will we be aggressively policed with our own tax dollars in our own cities?

As big law firms and elite colleges give in without a fight and Democratic elected officials have to be pressed to defend democracy, it is clear that this struggle is up to each of us.

Here is the Houston Democracy Project list of things each of us can do to fight Trump/Musk. Here is a fundraising pitch for the Houston Democracy Project. I'm doing the work and showing up in many different ways.  Please help the effort.

Above you see word of an excellent program I'll be part of Wednesday, March 26th at 6:35 PM. Here is the link to register.

One thing I'm going to talk about on the broadcast is the need for millions of people to be on the street.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer agrees.

From Bloomberg News reported in the Spokane Spokesman-Review:

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer predicted Americans will “rise up” if President Donald Trump defies courts that challenge his policies, saying he doesn’t trust Trump’s pledges to abide by judicial rulings.
Schumer was responding to a question on NBC’s “Meet the Press” about a previous comment that any such effort by Trump would require “extraordinary action” by Democrats...If “the public is so, so angry and takes action – and certainly we Democrats will – it will trigger a mass movement from one end of the country to the other, something that we haven’t seen in a very long time,” Schumer said.

Hold Schumer and all Democratic electeds to those words as our crisis deepens. When we hit the streets in mass, there will be a lot of police. When there is " a mass movement from one end of the country to the other..", we''ll be looking to see what elected officials are standing with us and who is calling for police restraint.

There will be anti-Musk/Trump protests in Houston on April 5th. These protests will be across the nation. Look for protests near you and spread the word. I think this will easily be the biggest day of protests of Musk/Trump's Presidency.

There are regular local actions that you can take part in.

There is a protest each Tuesday at Senator John Cornyn's office. This protest, which has been taking place for over years, is 11:30-1, 5300 Memorial Dr

There is also a new weekly protest every Friday, noon to one, at the Social Security office at 13302 Westheimer.

You can also organize your own protest or action.

There is a lot of trouble ahead. It's not clear what the best path forward is. But I believe that there is a path forward. Let's keep navigating together no matter the challenges in the upcoming weeks and months.

Above you see a protest at the Social Security office at Eldridge & Westheimer yesterday. There was a crew of about 40 folks. The first person in the picture, Marsha, organized the event. She does some of her organizing with Indivisible Katy Huddle.

Here are some points--

1. The next protest or action will be when you organize it.

2. This will now be a weekly Friday event from noon to one. The exact location is 13302 Westheimer.

3. Eldridge & Westheimer is a great intersection with many motorists eager to show support & be motivated by your activism & leadership. You could organize something there yourself.

Houstonian Starts Council Discussion On HPD Cooperation With ICE-We All Have To Fight

Despite Mayor Whitmire's assertions that HPD would not be assisting ICE, a Houston man stopped for a cracked windshield was reported to ICE by HPD. He was not wanted for any crime.

From the Houston Chronicle:

"Houston police officers are now being told to call federal immigration authorities anytime they come in contact with one of at least 700,000 people listed in a national database over deportation orders. At least one of whom was a man pulled over in Houston for a broken windshield, advocates said.....Local residents say they're already seeing the effects of the directive in Houston. Family members of Jose Armando Laines Argueta said Houston police turned him over to ICE agents during a traffic stop March 5....Houston Police Department spokesperson Shay Awosiyan said when Argueta was stopped, an “active warrant” showed up in his fingerprint search, and the officer called the number on the warrant, which brought ICE agents to the scene to detain Argueta....Not every city is treating the administrative warrants added to the national database the same as the Houston Police Department. Pittsburgh City Controller Rachael Heisler, for instance, wrote on social media that under current city policy, they wouldn't arrest or detain people based on civil immigration or administrative warrants....Houston City Council member Abbie Kamin questioned how the actions were protecting Houstonians....."Local law enforcement’s job is to keep our city safe from dangerous criminals, regardless of their immigration status," she said. "I have full trust in their ability to do so. But if this report is true, a large number of these 'warrants' have nothing to do with public safety. There is a difference between police keeping us safe, and doing Trump’s dirty work on the taxpayer’s dime, standing-in as immigration enforcement to harass and arrest individuals with no criminal background. Our officers are already stretched too thin — this makes Houston less safe and the mayor should reverse this decision immediately (for the non-criminal category)."

There was a ten minute discussion of this issue at Tuesday's public comment session of Houston City Council. The exchange begins at the one hour eight minute mark of the meeting. Houstonian Laura Gallier asks why is HPD stopping people for cracked windshields while serious crimes go univestigated & asks why she as a white woman who herself has a cracked windshield has not been pulled over. Councilmembers Kamin and Sallie Alcorn inquire of Mayor Whitmire what policies the city is following. They got no reply. (Mayor Whitmire does this all the time. He's asked a direct question by a member of the public or a Councilmember and he just blows it off.) Councilmembers Tiffany Thomas and Joaquin Martinez also commented.

Above you see Ms. Gallier. Citizen leadership is essential in the difficult days ahead. At the bottom of this post are details on how to speak at Council and follow Council proceedings. As we get deeper into authoritarianism, we'll see more and more that we are the main act & elected officials are bystanders we'll need to drag into the fight.

In the conversation at Council Tuesday, Mayor Whitmire passed up the opportunity to reaffirm that the city will not be assisting ICE or to say that HPD should not be pulling people over for cracked windshields. He didn't acknowledge that his pledges about HPD's relationship with ICE do not appear to be correct.

Houston City Council must demand answers from Mayor Whitmire. Houston City Council Public Safety Committee Chair Amy Peck should be asking questions. Ms. Peck likely won't do that since she is a Republican and part of the political party working everyday to destroy our rights. Mayor Whitmire appointed her Public Safety chair.

The stakes involved are far beyond what HPD is doing. Trump and ICE are rounding people up for whatever reason and sending them to the super-prison run by the crypto-bro, anti-democracy President in El Salvador. There is no reason to trust Trump and ICE or Whitmire and HPD. It's brown-skinned non-citizens today. It's you and I tomorrow.

From ABC News:

An attorney representing a migrant sent to El Salvador under the Alien Enemies Act says her client was deported due to a soccer logo tattoo, according to court declarations submitted Wednesday night......Linette Tobin is representing Jerce Reyes Barrios, a professional soccer player from Venezuela who protested the Maduro regime in February and March 2024 and was detained and tortured after one of the demonstrations.....The tattoo in question showed a crown sitting on top of a soccer ball with a rosary and the word "Dios" (God), according to Tobin. A declaration from the tattoo artist confirmed that Barrios chose it because it was similar to the Real Madrid soccer team logo, the attorney said. According to Tobin, those alleged gang signs were the hand symbol for rock and roll and "I love you" in sign language.... Around March 10 or 11, Tobin said her client was transferred to Texas without notice and was promptly deported to El Salvador on March 15..."Counsel and family have lost all contact with him and have no information" about his whereabouts, Tobin wrote in the court documents.

Our Houston municipal elected Democrats have an obligation to protect us to the extent they can from State of Texas government and the federal government. It might not be much. But it would be opposition rather than compliance or resignation or silence. It's not just us they would be protecting. It would be themselves and their families as well. They are no safer than us.

Don't Give Away Support To Any CD 18 Candidate Who Won't Work For Us & Won't Take Risks For Us

With the death of Congressman Sylvester Turner, there will be an election for a new Congressional District 18 representative whenever Governor Greg Abbott gets around to setting the date.

So far there are two announced Democratic candidates in the strongly Democratic district. One candidate is Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee & the other is former Houston City Councilmember Amanda Edwards. There will likely be more candidates soon.

Some elected officials have made an endorsement in the race. That's to be expected as candidates look to line up support. I've also seen some active rank & file Democrats make an endorsement. They are clearly free to do that, but I think they should hold off.

Support for CD 18 candidates should be contingent on how they answer questions that directly relate to protecting our freedom.

Here are some examples:

1. What is your plan to increase voter turnout in CD 18 in every election? How will you have the backs of precinct chairs and active volunteers? What will you do to encourage other local elected Democrats to work to increase turnout across Harris County? What permanent political infrastructure will you build to strengthen the Democratic Party in CD 18?

2. What is your plan to protect Houstonians from State of Texas government and the federal government? Will you aggressively fight authoritarianism? How? Will you confront the right even if it leads to threats to your personal safety? Will you take part in street protests & be on the same side of a police line as pro-democracy Houstonians?

Don't offer backing to anybody only offering business as usual. Business as usual has taken us to this nightmare we are experiencing. Elected officials are our elected employees. They must assume every burden and risk that freedom-loving Americans will be taking up in the challenging days ahead. Demand that they do so.

Molly Cook Town Hall-She Must Show Up For Us & We Must Fight For Texas/Nation Where Good Can Be Done

Yesterday I went to a town hall meeting held by my State Senator Molly Cook. Above you see Senator Cook at the meeting. Senator Cook was elected in 2024.

Senator Cook spoke about bills she is sponsoring, was friendly and accessible with folks and well-informed on policy details.

I made a question/comment to Senator Cook that long-term Harris County elected Democrats sitting on big campaign treasuries need to step up to boost turnout & support the rank and file who provide so much volunteer labor. I said elected officials must hold other electeds accountable.

I also said the time is approaching where elected officials will have to decide what side of a police line to stand on as our rights are stripped away. Elected officials need to assume the same risks each of us will assume in the difficult days ahead. This is all headed to the streets.

I made the same comment/question to Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee a few days ago.

Senator Cook said elected officials should do more to help at election time & that she believed we were already in an authoritarian situation. We'll see how she proceeds.

As a constituent of Senator Cook, I'd be fine if she left the legislative session and spread word in a Paul Revere-fashion, (It looks like most funding for Paul Revere's home in Boston comes from sources in Massachusetts. So the place is still open and the website is up.) about what is taking place and encourage people to mobilize and act.

But that's easy for me to say. I do okay in life. Senator Cook talked about trying to get legislation to help ensure people in assisted-living facilities don't get stuck up on top floors during our repeated Centerpoint Energy/Greg Abbott power outages. That would be a big deal for some folks.

The Texas Senate as described by Senator Cook seems unpleasant. I don't think I could sit with people so engaged with being horrible as are Texas Senate Republicans. Senator Cook was clear that much of her proposed legislation was unlikely to become law.

Senator Cook signed up for elected office knowing the political situation in Texas and nation. Her obligations to District 15 are substantial. She is needed in both the legislature & in ways yet-to-be-seen in this nightmare we are experiencing.

At the same time, Senator Cook is 33 ( Christian Menefee referenced above is just 37.) and wants to do some good in the world. We have an obligation to her and to all younger folks, who want a Texas and a nation where they can use their best talents and live decently.

Let's all keep up the fight together no matter what is ahead.

(The Houston Democracy Project is always on the go. In addition to the report of the town hall above, here are accounts of recent public forums with Rep. Wesley Hunt, Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector Annette Ramirez, Rep. Al Green, Rep. Lizzie Fletcher and Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee.)

I'm a rank & file Houstonian. I’ve volunteered extensively for Democratic candidates and causes, and served as staff for multiple campaigns. My work for Democratic campaigns has involved communications and strategy.

I’m an organizer of the Weekly John Cornyn Houston Office Protest. The Cornyn Protest team has been outside Senator Cornyn’s office each Tuesday for eight years now with one clear message: In addition to voting, we must show up physically and non-conventionally for the fights over democracy. Events have proven this assertion correct.

I'm on the Egberto Willies Politics Done Right Show every Thursday from 6 AM to 7 AM for the Houston Democracy Project segment. You can hear the show on the radio, stream it on KPFT or watch later on Egberto's YouTube channel.

I am the 2024 Barbara Cigainero Volunteer of the Year Award recipient the Houston LGBTQIA+ Political Caucus. I have a political science degree from Xavier University in Cincinnati and ran a Cincinnati City Council office.

I read a lot of books and follow baseball closely.
