Here is a list of Labor Day actions in the Houston-region. It is essential we show up for ourselves. These events are volunteer-organized. Many Houstonians Ask City To End HPD Cooperation With ICE-Council Dems Silent

Many people came to Houston City Hall on Tuesday evening to talk about the Houston Police Department working with ICE.

(Below you'll find information on interacting with and watching Houston City Council.)

Here is the link to the session. Above you see one the people who spoke at Council about ICE and HPD.

Mayor Whitmire has said HPD is not working with ICE. But that's not true.

From KUHF 88.7:

"A spokesperson for Mayor John Whitmire told Houston Public Media that the mayor "has consistently stated that the City of Houston is not ICE and does not focus on immigration enforcement."

From the Houston Chronicle:

"More than half the Houston police calls to immigration authorities since the start of 2025 have come during routine traffic stops, internal Houston Police Department reports show...Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents responded to the calls and detained people a smaller percentage of the time, around 24%, but the mere fact that police are calling them on routine traffic stops has immigration advocates concerned.....For years, the Houston Police Department maintained a code, used only around once or twice per year before 2025, to document the times when officers encounter someone and call ICE on them. The reports are categorized as immigration inquiries....Starting in 2025, the number of reports logged under that code has risen drastically Records show Houston police have called ICE on at least 58 such people this year as of May 31."

A lot of people spoke at Council, but no Councilmember responded. I waited to write this post for the Wednesday business session of Council. I wanted to see if any Councilmember used the personal time they have at the end to address any topic, to talk about HPD and ICE.

Nope.

It's not just about ICE. ICE is part of a larger structure and apparatus of secret police, suspension of due process and attacks on cities that put all Houstonians at risk.

There have been previous Council meetings where many Houstonians spoke about HPD and ICE. I've done so myself.

I'm going to continue to ask Houston City Council to call on HPD to stop working with ICE. I hope that people keep on pressing Council on the subject. They should speak up not just for the good of the city and for the rule of law, but out of self-interest as well. Is this future they want for themselves and their families?

At the same time, I appreciate the clarity of their silence. Elected officials are not at the lead of our fight for democracy. We are deep into this crisis of ICE and assaults on civil liberties. We must demand more of Houston City Council Democrats, but we can't make them step up. We do however control our own actions. The challenge ahead is ours.

Public comment time at Houston City Council is each Tuesday at 2 PM with the exception of the last Friday of each month when it is at 5:30 PM. Here is how you can speak at Council and here is how to contact your councilmember.  The earlier before the session you sign up, the higher up on the speaker's list you'll be. The agenda session to conduct Council business is each Wednesday at 9 AM. The agenda is posted in advance. Council can be watched live on HTV Houston Television and the most recent session is available at any time on the HTV feed on Facebook. Here is the link to past sessions of Council. Here are maps of Council districts so you can see who represents you.

Houston Democracy Project Grassroots Freedom Calendar, 8/27-9/2

Below is the current, Wednesday, 8/27, Houston Democracy Project Grassroots Freedom Calendar.

Please tell folks this resource exists & leave a comment or message me if I'm missing something. I mostly feature autonomous actions outside the networks of elected officials & traditional organizing groups. (The Houston Democracy Project Blog Post for this is in the comments. It has links to some of the events.)

The next action is when you organize it. The First Amendment is your permit. The only credential you need is your existence. You don't need to feel confident to proceed. Voting is not going to be enough.

Here is the list:

Thursday 8/28—Egberto Willies’ Politics Done Right broadcasts the weekly Houston Democracy Project hour from 6 AM-7 AM. Politics Done Right is on KPFT 90.1 every weekday morning from 6 to 7 & there is also Egberto’s 3 PM show on YouTube and his Substack. Egberto is essential local independent media who merits support.

Thursday, 8/28--Weekly protest at Dan Crenshaw’s office from 10 AM-11 AM at 1855 Kingwood Dr.

Details: Dan Crenshaw will be in town for a town hall. This week's protest will be in front of his office. The address listed is the vacant bank between his office and the fire station. This is where you can park. DO NOT PARK IN HIS BUILDING'S PARKING LOT. We are non- violent and we do not engage with hecklers. Stay on public property: sidewalk and ground between the sidewalk and street, median. Regular pedestrians have the right-of-way

Thursday, 8/28—Dan Crenshaw Town Hall, Kingwood Community Center, 4102 Rustic Woods Dr. The Town Hall starts at 5 PM.

Details: There will not be questions from the floor. As you enter, you will be given a card to write your question on. Crenshaw’s team will decide what questions are given to him. This is a public place and you have 1st amendment rights, but if they post a notice that signage is not allowed, you risk being asked to leave if you choose to bring a protest sign inside. The center has a seating capacity of up to 350 people, so I recommend arriving early. The event actually starts at 5:00. We will be there at 4:30 to make sure we can get in. There will also be an outside protest. (I’ve seen it suggested Crenshaw will take question from the floor. Who knows?)

Friday, 8/29—Weekly protest organized by Marsha Kamish at the Social Security office at 13302 Westheimer from noon to one. They get strong support from passers-by at a busy intersection.

Saturday, 8/30--Chicano Unity Day from 3 PM-8 PM. There is a meet up at Eastwood Park at 3 PM, a march to Las Parras Cafe at 3401 Harrisburg Blvd. at 3:30 and then a solidarity program at Las Parras, 4:30 to 8.

Sunday, 8/31-Weekly Sunday protest at the Avelo Airlines HQ, 10:30 AM-12 PM 12 Greenway Plaza. Avelo is flying people abducted by ICE. This event is held by Houston Area People's Advance. (I do not know this group.)

Monday, 9/1-The next big Houston 50501 protest, 10 AM-2 PM.

Details: Houston's Labor Day March 2025 planned for southwest Houston will announce the details by email and social media to attendees & registrants as we get closer to Monday September 1st. Be sure to post your intent to participate in our record-breaking 50k Houston Labor Day March 2025 on your social media! Already, more than a dozen different Houston area groups, non-profits, parties, and activist organizations have signed on to participate in the march!

Monday, 9/1—We Rise Up will stage Families Over Billionaires Labor Day protest along with a food drive at Conroe City Hall, 9 AM-12 PM.

Monday, 9/1-Workers Over Billionaires at 9 AM at intersection of West Lake Houston and Kingwood Dr. This is an Indivisible Kingwood event. They get good crowds for these rallies.

Monday, 9/1—Labor Day Protest hosted by Indivisible Katy Huddle, 5 PM-6 PM, 21010 Katy Freeway. Parking details-"Holiday Inn Express parking lot. Please don't park in Cheddar's lot, which is closer to the feeder road sidewalk - park away from the hotel entrance but in their parking lot.”

Monday, 9/1-Navasota Labor Day Protest against Trump’s horrible budget bill, 11 AM-1 PM, at 306 E. Washington Ave

Tuesday, 9/2—Week 447 of the John Cornyn Houston Office Protest, 11:30-1 at 5300 Memorial Dr. It is essential people see others like themselves standing openly and confidently for freedom no mater the aggression of the right. There are extra signs or you can bring your own.

Trump Continues Construction Of Compliant Force To Take Our Cities & Our Rights

Trump's Executive Order today escalating the role of the National Guard in Washington, D.C., brings America closer to occupation of our cities by the authoritarian federal government.

From CNN:

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday tasking his secretary of defense, Pete Hegseth, with establishing “specialized units” in the National Guard that will be “specifically trained and equipped to deal with public order issues” — the clearest sign yet he intends to expand the US military’s role in domestic law enforcement activities across the country.....And he left the door open to deploying military to other cities, such as Chicago, telling reporters they are “ready to go anywhere,” with “less than 24 hours’ notice.”..It also orders Hegseth to “designate an appropriate number of each State’s trained National Guard members to be reasonably available for rapid mobilization for such purposes” and establish a standing “quick reaction reaction force that shall be “available for rapid nationwide deployment.”

This builds on previous orders that have given additional powers to police, increased the prospect of a military presence in cities & on the still-hanging threat to suspend Habeas Corpus.

There was also this from May about how ICE agents would be hired:

"No later than 60 days after the date of this proclamation, the Secretary of Homeland Security shall supplement existing enforcement and removal operations by deputizing and contracting with State and local law enforcement officers, former Federal officers, officers and personnel within other Federal agencies, and other individuals to increase the enforcement and removal operations force of the Department of Homeland Security by no less than 20,000 officers in order to conduct an intensive campaign to remove illegal aliens who have failed to depart voluntarily."

They are just taking whoever applies to be an ICE Agent right off the streets.

And they are also taking future city occupiers from right off the streets.

From the New York Times about today's order:

"The order also directs a task force in Washington led by a White House adviser, Stephen Miller, to create an online portal for “Americans with law enforcement or other relevant backgrounds and experience” to apply to join federal agents in enforcing Mr. Trump’s “crime emergency” order in the District of Columbia."

Trump is building an army of compliant extremists recruited from who-knows-where to takeover our cities and to take our rights. We must be ready for the difficult days ahead.

Yesterday, 8/23, Marsha Kamish was presented with a Women Making History award from Texas Democratic Women-Harris County Metro Area. Above you see Marsha accepting the award.

This fine club is led by Silvia Mintz & includes Linda Morales and Treasea Trevino in club leadership—Three great freedom fighters.

Marsha was honored for many reasons.

Here are some of the reasons:

* Organized 2000 person No Kings Rally in Katy and organizing Labor Day, 9/1, rally in Katy in support of federal workers. (This is part of a large number of Labor Day protests across the region and the nation.)

* Organizer of weekly Friday protest at Social Security office at 13302 Westheimer. That is a very busy location & many people see this action each week.

* Active in Indivisible Katy Huddle.

* Core 8 year co-organizer of the John Cornyn Houston Office Protest.

* Active Precinct Chair in Katy.

One thing that heartened me about this award was the recognition of protest by a strong Democratic club. Both protest and electoral politics will be essential in the challenging days ahead.

Marsha reminds you to vote & also says the next action will be when you organize it.

Congratulations to Marsha.

People Keep Telling Stories About Harris County Dem. Judges-Channel 26 Retraction

Fox Houston Channel 26 retracted a story saying Harris County Criminal Court Judge Natalia Cornelio had wrongly issued a personal recognizance bond to someone before her court. (Above you see a screenshot from Channel 26.)

Judge Cornelio acted correctly despite what was claimed as part of the very bad so called-Breaking Bond series that is on Fox 26. I won't link to any of Breaking Bond because there is much better programming out there to watch. Literally anything you do is a better use of time than watching that rotten show.

There is endless, relentless, bad, wrong and malicious coverage of Harris County Democratic Judges going on in right wing and Republican social media and traditional media spaces.  Elon Musk is pouring money into judicial elections in Harris County & Texas.

What more do you need to know?

Okay--You might need to know more. Good thing then that Harris County Democratic Judges are already on the 2026 campaign trail. They are saying over and over that they will come to your group and speak. It can be a community and neighborhood group beyond exclusively political. If you leave a comment here or e-mail me at [email protected], I can get you in touch with a Harris County Democratic Judge.

This post is light on details. There are plenty of folks who know more than I do. Here is the website of the Harris County Courts. It has on the front page links to a number of resources to learn more on your own.

Harris County Judges are not in favor of criminals running around Harris County. They are following Texas law and making rulings based on facts and good-faith decision-making. Don't believe anything you hear from the right, take some time yourself to learn about what is going on & make use of the public accessibility being offered by the judges.

And then talk to people you know about the actual facts. We cannot allow so-called law and order to be defined by people taking our rights on behalf of billionaires and white supremacists.

Texas House Democrats Wrong To Sign Police State Permission Slips-Fight Ahead Up To Us

Most all Texas House Democrats left the state earlier this month to stop the progress of the Trump-ordered redistricting. That was good.

Most of them-though not all-came back over the past weekend. I accepted it because it seemed clear they were not going to get enough members to stay away much longer and I don’t look for solutions in the fight for democracy centered on elected officials. I appreciate the members who have not returned.

As we move rapidly towards authoritarianism, we’ll see that each of us are the main act and the star performers.  Elected employees are in support role.

(Above you see word of a protest at the Texas Capitol this evening. Here is the page for members of the Texas House if you want to contact any of them.)

When some members returned on Monday, they were asked to sign a permission slips to be allowed the leave the House Chamber. In addition, the permission slip said a DPS state trooper would be attached to them. One Democrat who returned, Nicole Collier of Tarrant County, refused to sign and is confined like a prisoner in the Capitol.

I don’t understand why the House Democrats signed the slips. They represent us. The autonomy and freedom of action they signed away belong to us. How can we be fighting a police state and then have our officials acquiesce to a police state measure?

I urge House Democrats to not reenter the House Chamber while under police coercion. That would very much be the wrong example to set.

Even more important, the fact they signed in the first place makes it even more clear that the fight ahead is ours.

Standing Strong In The Heat In Fulshear-We Are The Leaders In Difficult Days Ahead

8/18/2025

30 patriots stood out on FM 359 in Fulshear today to demand that very bad U.S. Rep. Troy Nehls hold a town hall. His office is in the plaza where folks were protesting.

It was hot as hell. Four people had to sit down on a patch of grass under the shade provided by a utility pole.

Many people driving by offered support. It is important people see others like themselves willing to stand for freedom no matter the aggression of the right.

The next action is when you organize it, the First Amendment is your permit, your existence is your only needed credential, you don't need to feel confident--Just act.

This was fully grassroots organized. All rank & file. It was Indivisible Fort Bend County & Marsha Kamish and Indivisible Katy Huddle.

The right is coming for our representation, our rights and our lives. Each of us are essential in the difficult days ahead.

Rank & File Led Actions In Houston Area-Voting Will Not Be Enough

8/16/2025

There were good crowds in Katy & Kingwood today for rank and file led actions against Trump redistricting and in favor of democracy and freedom.

I was in Katy. The 1st picture is Katy, the 2nd is Kingwood & the 3rd is me today with the urgent message that voting will not be enough.

Indivisble Katy Huddle and Indivisble Kingwood were the organizers. These are fully volunteer groups and most all the resources these actions require come from the membership.

Each of us are the main act in the difficult days ahead.

Whether it's Gaza, Ukraine, Canada, Greenland or the District of Columbia, it's all just real estate to be stolen or conquered for the billionaires looking to become trillionaires to steal resources and preside over populations of genetically-enhanced white Christian babies.

That's why you don't need rights, an education, vaccines, flood insurance, retirement or affordable groceries. You don't need all that because you are not needed in the Peter Thiel/JD Vance/Elon Musk freakshow nightmare that has captured government.

There is nothing far-fetched in what I'm saying when you consider our history with the native population and Black people. These are pre-1865 people running America right now.

I'm on the Egberto Willies Politics Done Right Show every Thursday from 6 AM to 7 AM for the Houston Democracy Project segment. You can hear the show on the radio, stream it on KPFT or watch later Egberto's YouTube channel.
