Below is the current, 9/12-9/20, Houston Democracy Project Grassroots Freedom Calendar.

(Photo of the John Cornyn Houston Office Protest by Nora Dayton. Nora is doing strong work detailing protest in Houston and beyond.)

Please tell folks this resource exists & leave a comment or message me if I'm missing something. I mostly feature autonomous actions outside the networks of elected officials & traditional organizing groups.

The next action is when you organize it. The First Amendment is your permit. The only credential you need is your existence. You don't need to feel confident to proceed. Voting is not going to be enough.

Here is the list:

Saturday, 9/13--No Kings Returns, 9 AM-12 PM, 301 N. Thompson in Conroe. This has been canceled. Details:
11:45a UPDATE: We have decided to cancel this protest (Saturday, 9/13/25) out of an abundance of caution.
With new information about the suspect and increasingly inflammatory comments online AND in-person, we are becoming very concerned about everyone’s safety. This is a still developing situation, and we don’t want to put anyone in harms way. We have not been able to discuss safety precautions with our police contacts.

Our next scheduled protest is 9/27 at 9am in Downtown Conroe. We will see you there!

Sunday, 9/14-Weekly Sunday protest at the Avelo Airlines HQ, 10:30 AM-12 PM 12 Greenway Plaza. Avelo is flying people abducted by ICE. This event is held by Houston Area People's Advance. (I do not know this group.)

Tuesday, 9/16—Week 449 of the John Cornyn Houston Office Protest, 11:30-1 at 5300 Memorial Dr. It is essential people see others like themselves standing openly and confidently for freedom no mater the aggression of the right. There are extra signs or you can bring your own.

Thursday 9/18—Egberto Willies’ Politics Done Right broadcasts the weekly Houston Democracy Project hour from 6 AM-7 AM. Politics Done Right is on KPFT 90.1 every weekday morning from 6 to 7 & there is also Egberto’s 3 PM show on YouTube and his Substack. Egberto is essential local independent media who merits support.

Thursday, 9/18--Weekly protest at office of Dan Crenshaw, 10 AM-11 AM, at intersection of Kingwood and Green Oak. This is from Indivisible Kingwood.

Details: We meet up at the intersection of Kingwood Drive and Green Oak Drive at 10:00 a.m. Bring your favorite sign or pick one up there. You will be trespassing if you park in the shopping center with Big City Wings, unless you purchase something from one of the businesses. If you do buy something and park there, hold on to your receipt. Wherever you decide to park, make sure you’re legal! Once you have arrived, find your spot and be seen! Feel free to move around, but always stay on public property. We are a law-abiding group. Since we are individuals, you are not restricted to just this location. Some attendees like to gather in front of Crenshaw’s office.

Friday, 9/19—Weekly protest organized by Marsha Kamish at the Social Security office at 13302 Westheimer from noon to one. They get strong support from passers-by at a busy intersection. There is parking.

Saturday, 9/20--Make Billionaires Pay, 21010 Katy Freeway, noon-1. This is a very visible spot and there is parking in the convenient Holiday Inn lot. Bring a sign opposing the oligarch takeover of the country and let the many passers-by know they are not alone in how they feel.

Saturday, 9/20--Protest at the federal prison camp in Bryan where Ghislaine Maxwell is held. Show up to oppose a pardon to Epstein's partner. This is ten to noon at 1100 Ursuline Ave.

Saturday, 10/18--The next big 50501 Houston demonstration. It’ll be at Houston City Hall. More details to come.

Saturday, 10/18—Katy No Kings 2 at 21010 Katy Freeway. They had a large crowd here for the big No Kings day in June. They should do well again.

Today Just The Right Day To Be Visible-People Need To See Others In The Fight

I went out with this No Police State sign for 75 minutes today. This was the space I could claim today. The positive reactions & thank you's were like 50-2. People need to see others willing to show up no matter the political climate. They need to know others will be with them in the difficult days ahead. Today was just the right day to be assertive. The right intends to take our rights & purge us. Voting will not be enough. There is no savior running for some office. It is going to have to be us.

Issue With HPD Is How Responding To Threats To Democracy & ICE-Have Whatever View Of Them You Want

I sometimes write about HPD, protest and the current political moment. (HPD reads my social media.)

(Photo of over-policed Houston Labor Day pro-democracy rally and march by Nora Dayton. Nora is doing great work chronicling protest and freedom in Houston and other places as well.)

The issue is not should we thank police for keeping protesters safe (A frequent source of discussion in some circles.) or instead just say ACAB and be done with it. The issue for my work is what will HPD do if/when habeas corpus is suspended, will they help ICE kidnap people with no due process guaranteed & how will they respond when local protests grow larger? The largest Trump 2nd Term protest in Houston so far has been 26,000 at the June 14 No Kings demonstration.  (The next big No Kings event in Houston is Saturday, October 18. Let’s make it the biggest one yet.)

We know HPD is cooperating with ICE.

Is HPD out to stop protest? No. They basically do not get in the way of First Amendment things & I wager they don’t mind the overtime that larger protest sometimes affords.

Do they offer help and protection? Sometimes. Some officers are courteous and others let disdain for protesters show. I’ve had experience with this at the John Cornyn Houston Office Protest  We’ve had many interactions with police after 8 1/2 years. Some good and some bad. (There is more to this subject than I’m writing here, but there is no single answer to the question of does HPD offer assistance and protection to protestors.)

Does asking HPD for permits limit the scope of peaceful actions and increase costs? Yes. The First Amendment is your permit.

In my view, HPD in relation to protest is at bottom line there to protect property & to maintain order even if order is being defined by people taking our freedom. I also believe that HPD officers are individuals with varying views on current politics.

There is no point in antagonizing police just for the sake of antagonizing them.

It is no safer though to trust them to maintain your rights as the political climate worsens.

Ideally, there would be meaningful civilian control of police. But Mayor Whitmire is too close to HPD & Republican Houston City Council Public Safety Chair Amy Peck is clearly comfortable with the direction of the nation under Trump. In the weeks after the murder of George Floyd, Mayor Turner and Council Democrats, with the exception of Letitia Plummer, showed little interest in taking a hard look at HPD practices.

If you want to thank the police for being at a protest—Have at it. If you want a one size fits all view about police—Have at that as well. I’m not here to judge people who at least make the effort to show up.

My own views are:

  • Demand civilian responsibility for police actions.
  • Treat everyone-including police officers-as individuals.
  • As you fight for democracy, make connections with people outside of traditional organizing and political channels, because there is little money, career advancement or conventionally-awarded status in advocating for democracy. We are going to need each other.
  • Do not rely on police to protect your most basic rights and freedoms.
  • Act with the courage you can muster in the challenging days ahead.
  • Have access to an attorney.

Houston Councilmember Fred Flickinger Does Not Know Why People Are Marching-Tell Him

Last week I posted about the over-policed democracy rally and march from the Galleria area down Westheimer to Lamar High School. My post was shared by a local Republican. Hard right Houston City Councilmember Fred Flickinger made a remark in the comments. You see the comment above.

Councilmember Flickinger, who represents Kingwood and Clear Lake, wants to know “What “rights” are they marching for?” Let’s help him with that. Please call or e-mail him to tell him what rights we are marching for. These are universal values we are discussing and Mr. Flickinger would take a campaign donation from outside the district, so you should feel free to connect with his office no matter where you are.

Contact CM Flickinger now at 832-393-3008 or [email protected]

Among the rights we are marching for are:

  • Due process as we confront masked secret police who can banish you to South Sudan.
  • To able to marry the person you want to marry as gay marriage is back in the courts.
  • First Amendment rights without fear of being targeted by Trump.
  • Second Amendment rights in the face of reports of restricting gun ownership by trans people.
  • The right to join a union as Trump busts unions in the federal government.
  • Being assured Republicans won’t continue to undermine free elections.
  • Get occupying federal troops out of cities.

You can also remind CM Flickinger about his silence as Trump cuts impact NASA, the local National Weather Service, FEMA and the Texas Medical Center. CM Flickinger does find the time to spread misinformation about Harris County Democratic Judges.

Take this opportunity to familiarize yourself with the partisan breakdown on Houston City Council. There are ten Democrats and Six Republicans. Contact all the Republicans and tell them we demand our rights & to speak up against troops in our cities and attacks on our freedom. Below you see information about interacting with Council and contact info for Mayor Whitmire & all of Council.

Joint HPD/Federal Militarized Operation-No Reason For Either Paranoia Or Trust

The Houston Police Department put out the notice you see above regarding a joint military training operation with the federal government and other law enforcement agencies.

I’m not reflexively suspicious of military things in cities and in civilian spaces. These type operations are routine to a degree & I’ve seen convoys of army jeeps on highways and tanks transported on trains. I don’t give it much thought.

There was a similar ten day operation in Houston in 2022.

And yet--there is no reason to give HPD, John Whitmire or the federal government the benefit of the doubt in the current political environment. Certainly whatever is being rehearsed and whatever information is being obtained is useful to Trump’s plans to invade cities.

Did Mayor Whitmire ask any specifics about how what is learned in this operation will be used and get assurances it won't be used to violate people's rights. Below you see what Trump posted today about Chicago. That should give Mayor Whitmire pause....You'd hope....You'd think.

HPD won't come clean on its cooperation with ICE no matter how many times the Chronicle reports on the subject. Immigration enforcement is central to everything Trump does. Immigration enforcement should be seen as part of this operation.

Where is the two week pro-democracy operation where elected city officials fan out across Houston to inform people on the ever-growing threats to due process and civil liberties?

Just last week there was a substantial Houston Police presence at a peaceful pro-democracy rally and march.

The city and HPD may see all this as routine. Just like they see over-policing protest as routine. There is no reason for either paranoia or trust. We must stay alert, look out for one another and be willing to meet the challenge of the difficult days ahead.

CM Martinez Asks For Light HPD Hand With Striking Workers-Council Can Also Address HPD & ICE And Pro-Democracy Protesters

9/4/2025

Democratic Houston City Councilmember Joaquin Martinez said an interesting thing at yesterday's, 9/3, Council meeting.

Councilmember Martinez spoke in support of striking UNITE HERE Local 23 workers. They are striking the Hilton Americas Hotel. It is good that Mr. Martinez backs the strike.

From Channel 11:

"Workers at the Hilton Americas hotel in downtown Houston have been on strike since Labor Day. It's the first strike of hotel workers in Texas history. The workers have said they want higher wages and respect. They want at least $23 an hour in a new union contract. They said they've been negotiating since their last contract expired on June 30. "I’m on strike for better pay, a fair schedule, and more affordable health insurance. I’m in need of a surgery right now, but if I were to take off, I wouldn’t be able to survive. I had to take out loans this month just to afford my rent. I haven’t been getting the hours I need, even though I’m a full-time employee. Cynthia Pratt said. Pratt has been a server at 1600 Bar & Grille for 13 years."

At the 2 hour 3 minute mark of the HTV broadcast of the meeting, Councilmember Martinez said he called Mayor Whitmire to make certain the strikers could proceed without concern they would be arrested. Above you see a screenshot of Councilmember Martinez and a portion of his comments.

I found his comments interesting. It is useful to hear the public assertion that HPD response to a situation can be guided by elected officials. Over Labor Day, I wrote about a peaceful pro-democracy rally and march that commanded significant Houston police resources.

As we move deeper into authoritarianism in Texas and the nation, we can ask that Houston City Councilmembers advocate for a light police hand for pro-democracy Houstonians using First Amendment rights to demand freedom.

At the Houston City Council Public Comment session of August 26, many Houstonians asked Council to end HPD's cooperation with ICE. No Councilmember responded one way or another. But now we know for certain that Councilmembers do have a voice and do make asks regarding HPD responses. (Councilmember Martinez held a Know Your Rights event that included immigration rights this past January. He knows the deal about what is going on about all our rights & could speak about ICE if he decided to do so..)

Each day offers opportunity for Houston City Council to ask that HPD stop working with ICE.

Every elected official takes an oath of office to protect the Constitution of the United States.

Councilmember Martinez has asked that we be able to "..lift up our voices without any threats of being arrested."

Let's hold those words as a standard for Mayor Whitmire and Council as we oppose the far-right takeover of our lives and our futures.

Houston Democracy Project In Chronicle About Democracy March & HPD

I spoke at the conclusion of the democracy march yesterday that was very heavily policed. Others spoke as well. I was also quoted in the Houston Chronicle. The picture is of me speaking. This is all part of my work on the Houston Democracy Project.

From the Chronicle:

Neil Aquino, founder of Houston Democracy Project, said he was struck by the heightened police presence..."There are more (officers) than usual. In my view, protests are frequently overpoliced," Aquino said. "These folks just want democracy.....

The Houston Police Department sent dozens of squad cars, ATVs and a full unit of mounted horse patrols along with vans and unmarked cars. The units were stationed near protesters gathered at the beginning and end of the march route; some officers followed the crowd the entire way.....

Aquino was similarly frustrated with what he called authoritarian actions, such as the use of National Guard troops to patrol Washington, D.C., or the treatment of migrants who he says have been denied due-process rights.

"All my life, I've been told (to) trust the system, trust the process, and now I live in an authoritarian society," Aquino said.

During his speech, he encouraged protesters to attend City Council meetings and speak out about their concerns. He reminded the crowd that city council members have a duty to uphold the Constitution as much as any state or federal elected official.

Aquino's sign carried a message that echoed what he said:"Voting is not enough."

The next action is when you organize it. The First Amendment is your permit. Your existence is the only credential you need. You don't have to feel self-confident to move forward. Just proceed.

Big HPD Presence At Pro-Democracy Protest-Houstonians Want To Be Free

There was a democracy rally today in Houston. People met up at the Water Wall near the Galleria and marched down Westheimer 2 1/2 miles to Lamar High School. Houston 50501 & Immigrating Youth Texas played a large role in organizing the event. There was a larger coalition of sponsoring groups including the Houston Democracy Project.

There were hundreds of people today. I don’t know how many hundreds.

There was a very heavy police presence.

From the Houston Chronicle about the protest and march today:

“The Houston Police Department sent dozens of squad cars, ATVs and a full unit of mounted horse patrols along with vans and unmarked cars. The units were stationed near protesters gathered at the beginning and end of the march route; some officers followed the crowd the entire way.”

The police may have expected and been prepared for a larger crowd. They did nothing to obstruct the march. I saw no inappropriate police actions.

*When habeas corpus is suspended, how will protest be policed in Houston?

*Why do people who just want basic democracy merit such a forceful police presence?

*What about the six Republicans on Houston City Council who say nothing about and presumably support what Trump is doing? They are a far greater danger to Houston than the protesters today.

*How can these type police resources be rustled up at Labor Day holiday wages, but the grass at the park can’t get mowed and sidewalks all over town are cracked?

The upper left picture is a number of HPD dune buggy type deals.

Upper right is a HPD jail van in case a lot of arrests of Houstonians upset about losing rights and freedom needed to be made.

Lower left is some type of surveillance gizmo so everybody could be watched.

Lower right is some of the HPD horse units. They wanted to make certain people did not go on 610.

Democracy should be protected with the same vigilance with which 610 is protected.

A big topic at Houston City budget debates earlier this year was police overtime. There was a story in the Chronicle recently about police overtime. I’m not certain how anyone thought police overtime could be managed as we become an authoritarian society and rights are taken away.

Below is information about interacting with Houston City Council and contact information for Council.  All elected officials take an oath to protect the Constitution.

I'm on the Egberto Willies Politics Done Right Show every Thursday from 6 AM to 7 AM for the Houston Democracy Project segment. You can hear the show on the radio, stream it on KPFT or watch later Egberto's YouTube channel.

Here is a fundraising pitch for the Houston Democracy Project. I'm doing the work and showing up in many different ways.  Please help the effort.

    I'm Neil Aquino.

I'm a rank & file Houstonian. I’ve volunteered extensively for Democratic candidates and causes, and served as staff for multiple campaigns. My work for Democratic campaigns has involved communications and strategy.

I’m an organizer of the Weekly John Cornyn Houston Office Protest. The Cornyn Protest team has been outside Senator Cornyn’s office each Tuesday for eight years now with one clear message: In addition to voting, we must show up physically and non-conventionally for the fights over democracy. Events have proven this assertion correct.

I read a lot of books and follow baseball closely.
