Here are Houston Democracy Project Blog Notes & Observations for October 1st. Election Day is in 35 days on November 5th & Early Voting begins in 20 days on October 21st. (Today's Picture of the Day is the nice sky today over Houston. No troubles in the world.) * It is the first day of October. The last full month before the election. We are going to win. Look out for your mental well-being. Don't rely on social media networks to keep in contact with people you would trust or want to keep up with in an authoritarian crisis. Have the e-mail addresses, phone numbers and whatever contact information you need of people you trust. Keep score among people you know and the candidates who want your vote about who meets the moment leading up to election and after the election, and who does not. The most meaningful solidarity is between people who show up. Be hopeful. We are going to win. * It is another day since Trump called for police to be allowed to proceed without restraint and outside the law, without any objection from police unions. Nor have we heard any Houston City Councilmember or Harris County elected official ask local police unions what they think about Trump's threats against the public. We already know that local police unions support authoritarian Ted Cruz & the Fraternal Order of Police supports Trump. Whatever happens in the days ahead, recall who spoke up and who was silent with our rights on the line. * Asked why he did not come out and endorse Kamala Harris, one reason Senator Mitt Romney gave was fear of violence against him and his family. This is not the first time we've heard this type concern. Most local elected Republicans are fine with Trump. There are a few though I've heard third or fourth hand who are not Trump supporters. We'll likely never know. Trumpism is violent and threatens people. Elected Republicans are held hostage by the violence they've helped create. * 48 elected Democrats in Harris County and across Texas sent a letter to the U.S. Justice Department asking for federal supervision of how the State of Texas conducts the upcoming election. I hope the feds show up. Here is a fundraising pitch for Houston Democracy Project. I'm doing the work and showing up in many different ways. Please help the effort. Please sign the Houston Democracy Project petition to make the pledge to show up for freedom in 2024 no matter what. The Houston Democracy Project works daily to inspire, organize and strengthen pro-democracy coalitions in Houston and Harris County.
