A commentator about democracy I follow is Thomas Zimmer. Here is something he said recently: " Rightwingers have aggressively taken to the streets, the town halls, and to the beaches. They are trying to dominate the public square, and we mustn't let them. They understand that pluralistic democracy depends on all citizens feeling safe in the public square. Of citizens don't feel safe in the public square because it is ruled by intimidation, threats of of violence and displays of aggression, they won't be able to participate as equal citizens. As a result, democratic political culture perishes." There is plenty of reason to believe our current political situation will end up on the streets. We can't be pushed off the streets or out of public display of our beliefs by the aggression of the right. Above is me a couple of days ago on a busy Houston street. I'll be out many more times between now and Election Day. When someone yells out approval to what I'm saying--which by 15-1 is the reaction--I say "Be ready to fight" & almost every time the immediate response is yes. This is all part of my work with the Houston Democracy Project. If you'd like to be part of being out in the open for freedom, you can take part in the John Cornyn Houston Office Protest each Tuesday, 11;30-1, 5300 Memorial Dr., or join Steve Norris and myself each Saturday from noon to one at Hermann Park. We are just off the roundabout near the big statue of Sam Houston. Be ready to fight! Please sign the Houston Democracy Project petition to make the pledge to show up for freedom in 2024 no matter what. The Houston Democracy Project works daily to inspire, organize and strengthen pro-democracy coalitions in Houston and Harris County. Please share word of the Houston Democracy Project and support the effort with your contribution. If you have a question about the Project or a suggestion, please send an e-mail to [email protected]
