Here are Houston Democracy Project Blog Notes & Observations for October 20th. Election Day is in 16 days on November 5th & Early Voting begins tomorrow. (Above-Harris sign I acquired at a rally at Texas Southern U. in 2019.) Early voting begins tomorrow, 10/21, and ends on November 1st. 1. I've made a list of people I would trust in an authoritarian crisis and in the stressful days ahead. Friends, family, people I've met in Houston politics and activism. I'll add to the list contact information for these people outside of big social media platforms. None of the big platforms will be anything you can count on in the days ahead. This election is a mental health crisis and a threat to our futures. Consider using the start of early voting here in Texas as a spur to look out for yourself and the people you value and trust. It's not about being scared or intimidated. We just have to be ready. You'd be right to also consider self-defense in whatever way best makes sense for your home. 2. No matter where you are in the county, you can vote your local ballot. Share that with folks you know. Let's say you live in La Porte, but are in Klein for the day. You can go and vote your local La Porte ballot in Klein. Here is the list of polling places. Information about voting is at harrisvotes.com Be able to help folks vote. 3. The Harris County Democratic Party is still looking for people to help with poll watching and a party voter hotline. The intent is to make certain all our votes are counted and that the right is not able to overturn results it does not like. Here is the link for more information. 4. Votes in Harris County are counted by Harris County Clerk Teneshia Hudspeth. Attacks on election results in the county will focus on how the Clerk does her job. Clerk Hudspeth is skilled and ready. Part of winning this election will be making sure that the vote counters are allowed to their job. Clerk Hudspeth is prepared for whatever is on the way. Let's have her back as part of keeping ourselves safe. Upshot: With the election here--Look out for yourself and people you value, help people vote, be ready to protect our votes & support the people making certain the process goes right. Please sign the Houston Democracy Project petition to make the pledge to show up for freedom in 2024 no matter what. Here is a fundraising pitch for Houston Democracy Project. I'm doing the work and showing up in many different ways. Please help the effort. The Houston Democracy Project works daily to inspire, organize and strengthen pro-democracy coalitions in Houston and Harris County.
