![]() Above is word of a protest at Houston City Hall, tomorrow, Sunday, 3/2 at 3 PM. You see that elected officials, religious and union interests & progressive non-profits strongly-connected to elected officials are participants and sponsors of the protest. (You'll have to expand the picture to see who is taking part. Pictures can sometimes be difficult to insert on this platform. The list includes all four local Democratic Congresspeople, the AFL-CIO, Commissioner Ellis, LULAC, Bishop James Dixon, FIEL, the Houston Urban League and others.) (One of the listed organizers is Congressman Al Green. I feel that Rep.Green would be on the right side of the police line when needed. Here is a report from Rep. Green's recent town hall.) Good to see. Thank you to groups such as 50501 and the John Cornyn Houston Office Protest that have been on the streets. Grassroots efforts have led local opposition to Trump/Musk in Houston. A few days ago, I listened to a Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher telephone town hall. She had genuine concern about what is taking place & did not have a clear path forward on how to deal with it. Not for lack of trying. She is an institutionalist and the institutions are being trashed. It's different world. Here are some thoughts about how elected officials could respond to this crisis: 1. Aggressively push back against attacks on our freedom and do so all the time. 2. Address the fact that even when we win elections, Republicans want a Viktor Orban-authoritarian state. As important as it is, winning back the U.S House of Representatives in 2026 or winning back the Texas House will not solve the underlying issue. What is a way forward other than lifetime of conflict? 3. Given that we may be in for a lifetime of conflict, have our backs for strategies such as economic boycotts, general strikes and large-scale protest or whatever is a path forward. Not just have our backs--Take part in these actions. 4. Work year-round to improve turnout in safe gerrymandered Democratic districts. Top-down leadership from low-turnout districts is not keeping us safe. We get told every election that "Voting is our superpower." The failure of electeds to make every effort to strengthen turnout is some kryptonite to our superpower. 5. Stop berating constituents who want a more aggressive response from elected Democrats. There is a lot of trouble on the way. We must fight back with urgency, imagination, courage & great impact. Elected officials must have our backs as we lead the fight. I'm on the Egberto Willies Politics Done Right Show every Thursday from 6 AM to 7 AM for the Houston Democracy Project segment. You can hear the show on the radio, stream it on KPFT or watch later Egberto's YouTube channel. Here is a fundraising pitch for the Houston Democracy Project. I'm doing the work and showing up in many different ways. Please help the effort.
