Below is the current, Thursday, 8/21, Houston Democracy Project Grassroots Freedom Calendar.

Please share it around and tell folks this resource exists. Please leave a comment or message me if I'm missing something. I feature autonomous actions outside the networks of elected officials & traditional organizing groups.

The next action is when you organize it. The First Amendment is your permit. The only credential you need is your existence. You don't need to feel confident to proceed. Voting is not going to be enough.

Here is the list:

Friday, 8/22—Weekly protest organized by Marsha Kamish at the Social Security office at 13302 Westheimer from noon to one. They get a decent crowd and strong support from passers-by.

Saturday, 8/23-Houston 50501 banner drop. Details-

We're holding a high visibility banner campaign over I69 this Saturday 23 August from 10AM - Noon. We will meet at Will Weber Baseball Field first, then set-up on the nearest bridge together. Please join us to promote the upcoming Houston Coalition Labor Day March 2025 on September 1st. We could use help holding banners and large signs...and more eyes on our surroundings for safety.

Sunday, 8/24-There is a weekly Sunday protest at the Avelo Airlines HQ, 10:30 AM-12 PM 12 Greenway Plaza. Avelo is flying people abducted by ICE. This event is held by Houston Area People's Advance. (I do not know this group.)

Tuesday, 8/26—Week 446 of the John Cornyn Houston Office Protest, 11:30-1 at 5300 Memorial Dr. It is essential people see others like themselves standing openly and confidently for freedom no mater the aggression of the right. There are extra signs or you can bring your own.

Tuesday, 8/26-“Pack City Hall-ICE Out Of HTX.” The first evening session of Houston City Council Public Comment time will feature very many people asking Council to stop HPD cooperation with ICE. The session begins at 5:30 PM at Houston City Hall. Here is the link to sign up to speak. You must do so by 3 PM, Monday, 8/25. (This is the first monthly 5:30 session. Otherwise public comment time is each Tuesday at 2 PM.) Houston DSA and Houston Leads are helping organize this action.

Tuesday, 8/26-Indivisible Kingwood is holding a forum with Criminal Court Judge Melissa Morris. I am the moderator. The event is 6 PM-8 PM at Skeeter’s Mesquite Grill, 4125 W. Lake Houston.

Thursday 8/28—Egberto Willies’ Politics Done Right broadcasts the weekly Houston Democracy Project hour from 6 AM-7 AM. Politics Done Right is on KPFT 90.1 every weekday morning from 6 to 7 & there is also Egberto’s 3 PM show On YouTube and his Substack. Egberto is essential local independent media who merits support.

Thursday, 8/28—Weekly protest at office of odious Dan Crenshaw, 10 AM-11 AM, at intersection of Kingwood and Green Oak. This is from Indivisible Kingwood.

Saturday, 8/30--Chicano Unity Day from 3 PM-8 PM. There is a meet up at Eastwood Park at 3 PM, a march to Las Parras Cafe at 3401 Harrisburg Blvd. at 3:30 and then a solidarity program at Las Parras, 4:30 to 8.

Monday, 9/1-Workers Over Billionaires at 9 AM at intersection of West Lake Houston and Kingwood Dr. This is an Indivisible Kingwood event. They get good crowds for these rallies.

Monday, 9/1—Labor Day Protest hosted by Indivisible Katy Huddle, 5 PM-6 PM, 21010 Katy Freeway. Parking details-"Holiday Inn Express parking lot. Please don't park in Cheddar's lot, which is closer to the feeder road sidewalk - park away from the hotel entrance but in their parking lot."

    I'm Neil Aquino.

I'm a rank & file Houstonian. I’ve volunteered extensively for Democratic candidates and causes, and served as staff for multiple campaigns. My work for Democratic campaigns has involved communications and strategy.

I’m an organizer of the Weekly John Cornyn Houston Office Protest. The Cornyn Protest team has been outside Senator Cornyn’s office each Tuesday for eight years now with one clear message: In addition to voting, we must show up physically and non-conventionally for the fights over democracy. Events have proven this assertion correct.
