Houston Progressive Caucus Statement Opposing Houston Applying For Trump Model Cities Police Grant9/28/2026 Above is the Houston Progressive Caucus statement on City of Houston considering applying for a so-called Model Cities grant from Trump's Justice Department. There will be a lot of comment about this at Houston City Council tomorrow, 9/29. Then we will see when Mayor Whitmire returns it to the council calendar. (It's been withdrawn twice.) I've been pressing on this issue. I had a hand in this statement. I'll be staying with this in the days ahead. We can't have Trump and his white supremacists defining how we are policed in Houston. Whitmire's council never says no to ICE, Flock, right-wing public safety unions, militarizing Metro while reducing bus service, HPD overtime, further law enforcement entanglement with our dangerous federal government & with DPS as they arrest ICE protestors in Austin and may well have informed ICE about Salgado. There is always some reason for more cops, surveillance and citing peaceful pro-democracy protestors as reason for unlimited HPD overtime. Please contact Houston City Council to oppose applying to this grant. Here are all councilmembers and contact information.
