Yesterday I went to a town hall meeting held by my State Senator Molly Cook. Above you see Senator Cook at the meeting. Senator Cook was elected in 2024.

Senator Cook spoke about bills she is sponsoring, was friendly and accessible with folks and well-informed on policy details.

I made a question/comment to Senator Cook that long-term Harris County elected Democrats sitting on big campaign treasuries need to step up to boost turnout & support the rank and file who provide so much volunteer labor. I said elected officials must hold other electeds accountable.

I also said the time is approaching where elected officials will have to decide what side of a police line to stand on as our rights are stripped away. Elected officials need to assume the same risks each of us will assume in the difficult days ahead. This is all headed to the streets.

I made the same comment/question to Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee a few days ago.

Senator Cook said elected officials should do more to help at election time & that she believed we were already in an authoritarian situation. We'll see how she proceeds.

As a constituent of Senator Cook, I'd be fine if she left the legislative session and spread word in a Paul Revere-fashion, (It looks like most funding for Paul Revere's home in Boston comes from sources in Massachusetts. So the place is still open and the website is up.) about what is taking place and encourage people to mobilize and act.

But that's easy for me to say. I do okay in life. Senator Cook talked about trying to get legislation to help ensure people in assisted-living facilities don't get stuck up on top floors during our repeated Centerpoint Energy/Greg Abbott power outages. That would be a big deal for some folks.

The Texas Senate as described by Senator Cook seems unpleasant. I don't think I could sit with people so engaged with being horrible as are Texas Senate Republicans. Senator Cook was clear that much of her proposed legislation was unlikely to become law.

Senator Cook signed up for elected office knowing the political situation in Texas and nation. Her obligations to District 15 are substantial. She is needed in both the legislature & in ways yet-to-be-seen in this nightmare we are experiencing.

At the same time, Senator Cook is 33 ( Christian Menefee referenced above is just 37.) and wants to do some good in the world. We have an obligation to her and to all younger folks, who want a Texas and a nation where they can use their best talents and live decently.

Let's all keep up the fight together no matter what is ahead.

(The Houston Democracy Project is always on the go. In addition to the report of the town hall above, here are accounts of recent public forums with Rep. Wesley Hunt, Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector Annette Ramirez, Rep. Al Green, Rep. Lizzie Fletcher and Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee.)

Here is the Houston Democracy Project list of things each of us can do to fight Trump/Musk. Here is a fundraising pitch for the Houston Democracy Project. I'm doing the work and showing up in many different ways.  Please help the effort.

I'm a rank & file Houstonian. I’ve volunteered extensively for Democratic candidates and causes, and served as staff for multiple campaigns. My work for Democratic campaigns has involved communications and strategy.

I’m an organizer of the Weekly John Cornyn Houston Office Protest. The Cornyn Protest team has been outside Senator Cornyn’s office each Tuesday for eight years now with one clear message: In addition to voting, we must show up physically and non-conventionally for the fights over democracy. Events have proven this assertion correct.
