![]() It has two good days for citizen-activism in Houston. It's been a good two days for our ability to protect ourselves and make progress even in these times. Yesterday, the Harris County District Attorney's office dropped charges against citizen-hero Sarah Terrell who was arrested at an HISD unelected Board of Managers meeting for telling the truth. From the Houston Chronicle: "Charges were dropped against a Houston ISD community activist who was dragged out of her chair and arrested after repeatedly shouting at a Jan. 23 Board of Managers meeting, the Harris County District Attorney's Office confirmed Tuesday...Sarah Terrell was charged with trespassing after repeatedly shouting before board members planned to vote on a motion to sell district properties. The charges were accepted by the district attorney's office at the time and were dismissed after a two-hour pretrial diversion program, a spokesperson said Tuesday." The Houston Democracy Project made three blog posts here and posted on social media for people to e-mail the DA's office calling for the charges to be dropped. My understanding is that the DA's office got a good number of e-mails & that they made a difference. The days and months ahead may bring many conflicts between pro-democracy patriots and people who work to take democracy away. We must press our elected officials at every turn to be the side of democracy. If we don't stand up for Sarah, who will stand up for us when we take needed action to protect freedom for ourselves, our families and our communities? Elected officials must know we will have the back of everyday citizens like Sarah who act bravely on behalf of all of us. We showed up for Sarah just as she did for us. Today was another great day in Houston. The John Cornyn Houston Protest marked 8 years on Houston streets with a strong outing. You see the team above. We get good reactions every week--But today was very strong. People are encouraged when they see others standing strong. In addition to voting, we must be willing to be present physically. We saw this recently in South Korea where the people successfully rose up against martial law. There is every reason to believe that when Trump refuses to obey court orders or strips our rights by decree, a good portion of our politics will move to the streets or other non-conventional forms of political expression and action. The John Cornyn Houston Office Protest team sets the exempt of showing up & is ready for the fights ahead. We have a social media following and are well-known for standing every week for 8 years at the very busy intersection of Memorial & Detering. Please share word of the Cornyn Protest & please join us for friends/foes/passers-by/police to see. We are a friendly team with extra signs for all. Whatever amount of time you can spend with us is the right amount of time. Any day you join us is the right day. I'm on the Egberto Willies Politics Done Right Show every Thursday from 6 AM to 7 AM for the Houston Democracy Project segment. You can hear the show on the radio, stream it on KPFT or watch later Egberto's YouTube channel. Here is a fundraising pitch for the Houston Democracy Project. I'm doing the work and showing up in many different ways. Please help the effort.
