![]() I followed horse racing for many years. I followed it year round and not just during the weeks of the Triple Crown. (Picture is of Cincinnati's River Downs from 2011.) I can still tell you a bit about the careers of great horses like Man O'War, Citation, Ruffian and famous jockeys such as Eddie Arcaro and Willie Shoemaker. But the known and ongoing abuse of horses taking part in racing, and the money-driven refusal to mitigate injury to the horses has driven me away from the sport. I regret this because I started going to the race track at Narragansett Park in R.I. when I was a kid in the early 70's. I still even occasionally go to the track because I so often went with my father. We look for things to enjoy in this so-often toxic society even if we have to look the other way at what is really taking place. You can't be rigid about everything. But I just can't look the other way with horse racing anymore. The horses have no capacity at all to speak up or fight back. Please read all of NeilAquino.com
