Thank you to the rank-and-file Democratic block walkers and volunteers who clearly made a difference in the narrow Sylvester Turner victory as our next Mayor of Houston. These volunteers worked hard for their beliefs of a welcoming Houston and civic participation.
While I can't say that the win inspires the enthusiasm in me that I'm seeing from some Democrats today, elections are one important part of our overall politics and society. It is clear that defeated Republican Bill King represented something different and less hopeful than does Mr. Turner. I hope Mayor-elect Turner--a longtime insider--has the insight and imagination to look past the elected officials and fellow insiders he cited at some length for thanks at the start of his victory speech last night, and instead focuses on the whole of this large, hopeful, poor, interesting, frustrating and complex city.
