For folks outside Texas who see the New York Times---The angle on the story about the Texas primary that the far-right was defeated is incorrect.
While Senator John Cronyn--himself plenty conservative--beat a flawed Tea Party challenger, almost all the statewide Republican ticket is to the far Tea Party right. I've not given up that Wendy Davis can win, but the truth is that the incoming state leadership team & state legislature will be the most far-right yet. And then there is Ted Cruz & Rick Perry running for President and the push to the right that will bring. If you value compassion or are somehow vulnerable or different, the bottom line is that many of our political leaders in Texas are people who in a different society would be running a concentration camp, sending people to a gulag and passing laws mandating terrible punishment for being gay. It doesn't have to be this way. We can realize that the work of freedom is up to each of us and work hard for something better. But for the moment at least, this is where we are in Texas.
