"Fish Cleaning Station" (Photo above) is a permanent installation at the Texas City Dike in Texas City, Texas.
Its minimalism & symmetrical form suggest it purely as an aesthetic creation to be observed, contemplated & enjoyed. Yet the illusion of this work existing only for its own sake is shattered when a Texas City fisher person steps up to clean and prepare a fish that he or she has just extracted from Galveston Bay. The white of the concrete floor and the preparation tables stands as a transitional space between the grey Earthy gravel of the dike and the blue watery realms of the bay. Imagined and maintained by the Texas City Public Works Department, Fish Cleaning Station reminds us that our everyday lives are the most important source of inspiration and meaning.
