A mistake I've made in life involved a man I knew 25 or 30 years ago named Augustus (Gus) Caruso. Gus and I lived in Cincinnati when I knew him. Gus is now deceased.
Gus and I met attending Cincinnati Reds games in the 1980's. We would stand around with a bunch of other folks in the same place at many games at the old Riverfront Stadium.
The picture in this post is of Crosley Field. Crosley Field was the home of the Cincinnati Reds until 1970.
I was in my teens in early 20's when I hung out with this crew. Gus was maybe 50 years older.
Gus was a lifelong resident of Cincinnati and had been attending Cincinnati Red's games nearly all that time. He could recall the 1939 & 1940 Cincinnati teams that reached the World Series.
I spent a lot of time with Gus at Riverfront Stadium, but I never asked him nearly enough questions. I should have asked him about what it like to live in Cincinnati the years before I moved there, and I should have asked him his impressions of Reds players and other National League players he saw over the years.
If you've got an older person in your life, be sure to ask them what they know. Do so out of respect and to learn what things were like before you were around.
