When I was sitting outside the proposed Houston baby jail location this past Sunday in a lawn chair, I brought a book because it was boring sitting outside the baby jail and I needed a distraction from the heat.
A guard watched me for the full two hours I was there. This person never left a small shaded area for almost the entire time and was on the phone most of the time. The clear majority of motorists who passed me either ignored me or looked at me for a second and then averted their eyes. It did not matter if they were white, Black or Hispanic. Yet for all the boredom, apathy and looking the other way, it is very possible that this location will soon house children separated from adults by our government & families held in indefinite detention as Trump refuses to hire the needed immigration judges to resolve the cases. These wrong actions can happen in a big city with millions of people nearby. There is often no collective awareness or widespread willingness to confront wrong actions from any segment of the population. It is just up to the people willing to show up. There is no real way to predict who will show up and who will not. Please consider showing up so that people who do bad things know that there will be a witness, so that they know we are not afraid and so you will be able to account for yourself. We can win these fights. But we have to show up. Please read all of NeilAquino.com
