A recent report from the U.S Justice Department details years of abuse by Baltimore Police regarding people of color and the poor. In addition to acts of violence against citizens of that city , there is a long-standing pattern of Baltimore police downplaying and ignoring allegations of sexual assault from Baltimore residents.
From the Times--... the scathing report that the Justice Department unveiled here on Wednesday — a data-rich indictment of how Baltimore police officers have for years violated the Constitution and federal law by systematically stopping, searching (in some cases strip-searching) and harassing black residents." Here is the press release from the Justice Department regarding the findings. This release includes a link to the full report. In 2014, the Justice Department made similar findings about the Cleveland, Ohio Police Department. What gets me about these reports--and there have been others as well---is that these cities are run by Democrats. It is no endorsement of the Republican Party--currently putting forth a brutal racist for President--- to say that city voters vote for Democrats years after year, but still suffer from aggressive and racially biased policing. Where are the Mayors and City Council members who allow these things to go for so long with little comment and even less real oversight? Voters of all races in our nation's cities need to demand better. While it so that economic conditions that can make life in cities difficult are often due to factors beyond the control of city hall, the conduct of police is clearly a matter of municipal concern. Reform of a failing American political establishment should start at the local level. A good starting point would be police reform brought about by municipally elected Democrats who have for so long ignored appalling police misconduct in many of America's cities.
