The books I'm taking on my upcoming vacation are as follows---
1. Imagined Communities by Benedict Anderson. This book is about the idea of nationhood and why people subscribe to the idea of a nation.
2. The Populist Persuasion by Michael Kazin. This book is about the history of populism in America for both good and ill. My own view is that we can be one of the people and above the people at the same time.
3. Baseball in the Garden of Eden by John Thorn. This book is about the history of baseball from the 1850's through the 1890's.
It is fun to learn about and to understand our world and all the things that interest us.
It is fun to learn these things simply because it is fun, and it is fun and useful because such learning helps make the best of the potential of our lives.
I believe everyday people have the ability to understand most things. It is up to each of us to make the effort to understand and impact the world we encounter each day.
