In preparation for my drive to Galveston earlier this week, I reread the chapter on the construction of the I-45/Gulf Freeway in the great book Energy Metropolis--An Environmental History of Houston & the Gulf Coast.

The Gulf Freeway runs from Houston to Galveston.

Some facts from the book--1. The Gulf was the 1st freeway completed in the US after WWII. 2. Plenty of federal money was used and accepted in Jim Crow/states rights Texas for this road. 3. The Houston Chamber of Commerce did a survey on air pollution in Houston in 1957 & concluded the problem was minor and that the "sea breeze" in the Houston area would clean out much of the bad air. 4. The Gulf soon increased the number of Houstonians visiting Galveston by 52%.

Everyday life is interesting. The things around us all the time are more interesting then what we are offered as entertainment in this society.

When we are informed about what is around us each day, we are better able to enjoy life. Also, when we are informed about what is around us each day, we are better able to offer everyday resistance to the many things in this society that have gone wrong.
