![]() For 18 years I lived in Cincinnati, Ohio. A discussion of many years in Cincinnati is the lifetime suspension of Pete Rose from baseball that was announced in 1989 because Mr. Rose had been wagering on the Cincinnati Reds while manager of the team. (Picture is of Pete Rose standing just to the left of Jimmy Carter in the Oval Office. ) I have supported this ban because the rules regarding gambling were clear and because such actions could lead to game fixing. However, now that Major League Baseball has an official relationship with the fantasy sports gambling operation Draft Kings, the ban on Mr. Rose seems hypocritical. (It won't surprise you learn that the average small-time player has little chance to win big money on Draft Kings regardless of what the ads for the company suggest.) For the reason of baseball's association with Draft Kings, I have changed my view of 25 years regarding the ban on Mr. Rose and I now feel he should be reinstated. This said, Pete Rose is a bad actor. Mr. Rose actually did grow up in the city limits of Cincinnati. He could have shown remorse for his misdeeds all these years by being an active in hopeful presence in Cincinnati instead of hanging out at dog tracks and whining about the ban.
