OPEN LETTER TO DEMOCRATIC PARTY LEADERS REGARDING NEEDED RESPONSE TO ATTACKS ON MUELLER INVESTIGATION

To: Democratic Party Officeholders, Officials and Candidates: 

The administration of Donald Trump has put our nation at risk of a Constitutional crisis and an authoritarian government.  

President Trump has made clear by both words and actions that Special Counsel Robert Mueller is at risk of being fired or that steps will be taken to limit the Mueller investigation.   

Such conduct by the President would call into question the rule of law itself. 

All people, no matter how powerful, must be subject to the same fair standards of scrutiny and, if warranted, prospect of punishment for illegal conduct.   

This essential standard of equal justice for all has apparently been forgotten by the great majority of Republican elected officials and rank-and-file voters. President Trump stands today in firm control of the Republican Party in every meaningful way. 

The impact would be felt directly by many of the very people the Democratic Party exists to serve and assist if Mr. Trump escapes Mr. Mueller’s investigation.  

The most economically vulnerable, and those who have historically faced discrimination, will pay the biggest price if our nation no longer maintains even the fiction that the powerful can be held accountable for illegal actions.  

And, of course, every American has a direct stake in the equal application of justice. 

All elected officials, from the local school board to the halls of Congress, swear an oath to uphold the Constitution.  

Because the circumstances are so significant and because the Republican Party has abdicated any responsibility to the nation, it is up to Democratic Party leaders to act in support of our most basic rights.

It is essential that Democratic Party leaders at every level have a plan to inform and mobilize Democratic voters, and all who care about freedom, in the face of Mr. Trump’s assaults on freedom.  

Such a course could include:

• Assertive statements to the press and on social media platforms that ending of Mr. Mueller’s investigation is unacceptable.

• Clearly specified and well-publicized plans about how you will respond if Mr. Mueller is fired. This response could include initiating or publicizing protests. 

• A willingness to join protesters on the street and the extension of visible support to those taking part in opposition to Mr. Trump’s actions. 

• Courage even if you are scared.  

I ask all Democratic Party candidates, party leaders and officeholders to please return the support we extend you with our donations, volunteer time, votes and trust. These are dangerous and stressful times that call for brave and creative responses.
