Here I am out on Harrisburg Blvd. today with my two-sided sign regarding the need for each of us to treat each other in a respectful way. I was also out on Broadway in our great city of Houston. Maybe you saw me walking.
In this society, it is up to each of us to work to create the climate needed for all of us to live decent and hopeful lives. A number of people gave me a friendly honk or wave from their car or truck. I spoke to a number of fellow Houstonians as I walked. A nice woman in a food truck gave me a bottle of water. People want to be acknowledged. They want their lives to be acknowledged. They want kindness. We are not going to be able to make progress in this often nasty society until we create a hopeful and optimistic framework of kindness and trust. I've handed my phone over to about 10 people I've just met on the streets to take my picture as I walk around Houston with my signs. So far nobody has run off with the phone. I'm going to keep walking and I'm going to keep trusting people. The work of establishing a framework and structure of trust and kindness is up to each of us when established institutions are struggling and often seem just bought off. I'm going to keep walking.
