READ TO BE BY YOURSELF AND WITH OTHERS---READING OFFERS KIDS A FORM OF AUTONOMY

Reading is a form of autonomy you can obtain even in close quarters. 

Children should be encouraged to read so they can escape in a fashion the suffocating constant presence of adults in the way modern parenting has developed.

When I was in my 20's and often went to bars and coffee houses, I'd bring a book and read so I could be out, but also by myself.

Reading is being by yourself, the things you learn by reading and a way to be with others who understand that you care about them but that you also like to read and think about stuff.
