SAN ANTONIO CHEF TICKETED FOR SHARING FOOD WITH THE HOMELESS---THESE EVIL LAWS ARE IN PLACE IN HOUSTON AND IN MANY AMERICAN CITIES

San Antonio chef Joan Cheever faces a $2,000 ticket for sharing food with the homeless.

San Antonio is one of an increasing number of cities that have ordinances banning the sharing of food with the homeless.

Here is a story from last year where a 90 year old man was ticketed for sharing food with the homeless in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

I'm sorry to say that my own city of Houston has such a shameful ordinance on the books.

It is all the worse that these laws are being passed in cities where the clear majority of elected officials are Democrats. How can these laws be expressive of the values of the so-called party of the left in our nation?

I spoke up against the passage of the Houston anti-food sharing ordinance. The work of freedom is up to each of us.

These laws reflect the growing rule of the rich and the increasing lack of empathy in our nation.

One way to start the shift to a more fair and more kind nation and world is for each us to start today to treat people in a respectful and caring way. It matters how we conduct ourselves each day in life.

We also need to be part of the public policy debate on how we help and care for one another in America.

These laws stun me, especially because, as you point out, so many are passed in municipalities where fairly progressive majorities rule.

The utter failure of Texas generally and cities specifically to address the problems connected with homelessness make this all the worse. We're criminalizing the effects of our failed policies.

We're a state where people who are obviously suffering from mental illness are routinely taken by law enforcement and driopped off across the border to the next county so that the county doesn't have to pick up the bill. We're a state where our old attorney general bemoaned the fact that the state could not execute people with 50 IQ's because it might encourage others to fake having 50 IQs so they could kill!

There are an incredible number of issues that lead to homelessness, and NONE of them are fixed by denying people FOOD.

I'm sorry to go off like this on your page, where you are always so peaceful and magnanimous, but this topic gets me going. There's no excuse to add to people's suffering!

Actually, San Antonio failed to pass their anti-homeless ordinance so she was ticketed for violating the mobile food vender ordinance. http://www.texasmonthly.com/daily-post/san-antonio-gave-woman-2000-ticket-feeding-homeless

Even so, I think she has a strong defense against this ticket. First, she isn't vending anything since she is giving food away for free. Second, even if the law applies she has the RFRA defense. What she is doing is no different from a picnic/potluck/tailgating event. Are picnickers subject to the same ordinance?
