San Antonio chef Joan Cheever faces a $2,000 ticket for sharing food with the homeless.
San Antonio is one of an increasing number of cities that have ordinances banning the sharing of food with the homeless. Here is a story from last year where a 90 year old man was ticketed for sharing food with the homeless in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. I'm sorry to say that my own city of Houston has such a shameful ordinance on the books. It is all the worse that these laws are being passed in cities where the clear majority of elected officials are Democrats. How can these laws be expressive of the values of the so-called party of the left in our nation? I spoke up against the passage of the Houston anti-food sharing ordinance. The work of freedom is up to each of us. These laws reflect the growing rule of the rich and the increasing lack of empathy in our nation. One way to start the shift to a more fair and more kind nation and world is for each us to start today to treat people in a respectful and caring way. It matters how we conduct ourselves each day in life. We also need to be part of the public policy debate on how we help and care for one another in America. Please read all of NeilAquino.com

These laws stun me, especially because, as you point out, so many are passed in municipalities where fairly progressive majorities rule.

Actually, San Antonio failed to pass their anti-homeless ordinance so she was ticketed for violating the mobile food vender ordinance. http://www.texasmonthly.com/daily-post/san-antonio-gave-woman-2000-ticket-feeding-homeless
