![]() Congratulations to the City of Seattle for passing a $15 minimum wage. (Picture is of Seattle that I took from the Space Needle in 2010.) The minimum wage has not nearly kept up with inflation over the years. A living wage ordinance here in Houston would be part of a complete social justice agenda of which the recently passed anti-discrimination ordinance would be an important component. I once asked Democratic Houston Mayor Annise Parker directly at a blogger event if she would consider a living wage ordinance for Houston. I'm sorry to say that Mayor Parker's reply was a clear no. This response was not a surprise from Mayor Parker given her support of Houston's cruel anti-food sharing ordinance. We can't count on anyone but ourselves to make our political leaders understand that hard working people merit a fair and living wage for a hard day's work. There have been protests in the United States and around the world for fair wages from McDonald's, Wal-Mart and other large employers. The work of freedom is up to each of us. Everyday resistance is up to each of us. Please read all of NeilAquino.com
