Texas Will Again Be Defined By The Multi-Ethnic World That Stephen F. Austin Knew
I'm reading Ann Hyde's Pulitzer Prize finalist book Empires, Nations & Families--A New History of the North American West, 1800-1860.
The picture is of the 6 flags that have flown over Texas. Who knows what the future holds for Texas. Photo by Ann W.
Writing about Stephen F. Austin's Texas in 1831, Hyde says--"What did it mean to be Texan, Comanche, Tejano, Mexican, Cherokee, or American in the place that would eventually become Texas?"
Currently in Texas we have an aggressive angry Anglo minority defining the state.
But the time will come when that changes and when we'll define Texas on our terms.
As Ms. Hyde suggests, this multi-ethnic more fluid concept of Texas is what Texas has most often been over the years.
