Thanks to Maya Ford for her act of Civil disobedience this morning at the proposed baby jail location at 419 Emancipation in Houston.
Ms. Ford was briefly detained and then released without charges. But she had no way in advance of knowing what would happen. I’m glad to say that I was one of many there in support of Ms. Ford. Ms. Ford wanted the protest today to be silent and said that silence and witness have an energy that needs to be expressed and heard. She spoke about a point that I’ve felt as well that the Americas are connected. We are citizens of the New World from Tierra del Fuego to the Arctic Circle. Most importantly, Ms. Ford got it right. We are all asked right now to act as individuals about what is taking place in this society today. We may well all be called—very soon— to the place of personal action and courage that Ms. Ford took up today. Or we may all come to regret that we did not find that place before it was too late.
