VETERANS DAY 2014---LESSONS OF KOREAN WAR COMBAT MEDIC

11/10/2014

November 11, 2014 is Veterans Day.

My father was a Korean War combat medic.

Here is what I gathered from what he said, wrote & what I figured out on my own

1. Rank & file soldiers on both sides of a war share a common humanity.

2. Leaders of nations--including so-called democracies--are often bad people.

3. Civilians always lose in war.

4. Both sides in a war commit atrocities.

5. Tony never once in my hearing made a religious or patriotic comment. These things are not inherently connected to military service or with being a good American.

6. While Ted Williams was regretfully a Republican, he served in two wars though he did not have to go to Korea.

7. When I tried to read a history of the Korean War, it was painful and I had to stop.

8. Children of combat veterans may have a personality in some respects influenced by the service of said parent.
