WHAT TO WEAR TO JURY DUTY?---HOW ABOUT A TIE OR OTHER FORMAL CLOTHING TO SHOW RESPECT FOR THE PUBLIC PURPOSE AND FOR OUR FELLOW CITIZENS
I have jury duty today in the courtroom of Justice of the Peace Dale Gorczynski here in Houston.
I've selected a tie out of respect for the public purpose. I'll be out among my fellow citizens for an important purpose and I want to engage in right and proper conduct.
We need to respect each other. We've got to give value to public places and the role of everyday people in public life.
I've also selected two books to read as jury duty always involves sitting around.
The picture is of my tie and my books.
One book is called The Age of Homespun--Objects and Stories in the Creation of the American Myth by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich. This book is about the significance of women's crafts and creations in Colonial and post- Revolutionary War America.
The other book I have is The Substance of Civilization---Materials and Human History from the Stone Age to the Age of Silicon by Stephen Cass. This book is about how we've used all the elements of the cosmos to make our human world.
Jury duty is fun. You get to sit around and read and--should you be selected for a trial-- do something as a citizen that has value.
I'm looking forward to my jury duty.
