I've been watching Houston City Council sessions. I watch them as I make blog posts or wash the dishes or cook. I also watch baseball games on the phone during those times. Right now I'm watching the Kansas City Royals at Baltimore Orioles game. I view the Council meetings on HTV-Houston Television. Above you see some exciting council action. There are captions as well. The meetings have often been quite lively since Mayor Whitmire took office. I'm watching them as part of the Houston Democracy Project. I want to be able to speak and write correctly about City of Houston politics, & I want to know the elected officials and city government department heads as we face an authoritarian threat. Public comment session of Council is each Tuesday at 1:30 and the Agenda Session is each Wednesday at 9 AM. The Committee schedule has not yet been set for the new term of Council. Here are the details of the schedule and also how to sign up to speak to Council. Mayor Whitmire has recently said he'll be changing some these times and procedures. City government is often ignored. It is ignored at the ballot box as turnout in 2023 Houston municipal elections was only 17%. Migrant round-ups and attacks on civil liberties won't happen by themselves. They will require a local infrastructure. We must understand local politics and who the relevant actors are in the challenging days ahead. Please sign the Houston Democracy Project petition to make the pledge to show up for freedom in 2024 no matter what. The Houston Democracy Project works daily to inspire, organize and strengthen pro-democracy coalitions in Houston and Harris County. Please share word of the Houston Democracy Project and support the effort with your contribution. If you have a question about the Project or a suggestion, please send an e-mail to [email protected]
